Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters
a book by Charlie Kirk
(our site's book review)
The Amazon blurb says that Make no mistake. We are in a war for the soul of our country. And it’s a fight we must win before it’s too late.
Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters takes that fight to our nation’s college campuses, where the left’s decades-long campaign to transform our universities into radical re-education camps is working, and now we are seeing the disastrous results. Free speech, intellectually rigorous debate, and the simple concepts of tolerance and fairness are routinely being corrupted and weaponized to promote radical leftist ideologies, enforce groupthink, and marginalize or eliminate any student, professor, and dean who gets in their way. All the while, these hothouses of close-mindedness are staffed by blame-America, anti-free market, victimology professors who are twisting the minds of tomorrow’s leaders.

"Charlie Kirk's Campus Battlefield Is a Hot Mess"—Adam Rubenstein, THE WEEKLY STANDARD
"Fundamentally unserious, unburdened with self-awareness, and gleefully engaged in stoking the fire of tribalism, Kirk is, above all things, a performer, peddling his own personal brand in the guise of training young conservatives and resisting liberal indoctrination on campus. It’s an act that’s had unsettling success in conference halls, on cable news, and on social media. But like most performances, it doesn’t work quite so well on paper. Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters’s flaws are as apparent as they are numerous, and the book lays bare just how few clothes adorn Turning Point and its emperor. . . . To say this book even has arguments is itself being generous. What it has instead are statements—piled up, one on top of another, variously adorned with clichés, and presented as if the heap constituted something with persuasive force." In the book, flaws are as apparent as they are numerous, and the book lays bare just how few clothes adorn Turning Point and its emperor, says Quillette—we disagree
"Much like the president Kirk glorifies, Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters is a sloppy and incoherent mess. It valorizes a gauzy ideal of academia -- “colleges are supposed to be a place (sic) of discourse, characterized by thoughtful debate, a search for knowledge, and civility” -- while also casting lazy, haphazard, and atrociously written allegations of academic perfidy. 'The Classics, which have survived for centuries because of their enduring relevance, have been pushed aside by the proposition that they are little more than the narrow-minded, racist, misogynist, homophobic ramblings of old white men,' Kirk complains, citing nothing in evidence. 'A smug liberal elite has trashed them, arrogantly presuming to know better and smart enough (sic) to create an entirely new explanation of everything.'" (Source: The perfectly incoherent Trumpism of Charlie Kirk's Campus Battlefield, Simon Maloy, Media Matters)
"Kirk invokes safe spaces, political correctness, and liberal indoctrination as the symptoms of higher ed’s sickness. He excoriates the University of California at Berkeley, where protesters last year effectively shut down a planned speech by Milo Yiannopoulos, and lavishes praise on the University of Chicago’s free-speech policies. He complains about the injustice of students who were punished for handing out copies of the U.S. Constitution." Universities were once a beacon of free speech, but today, measures are being put in place to stifle speech under the guise of protecting students—this censoring of speech to shield students from hearing opinions that differ from their own is an insult to our democracy!
"Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters is a useful tool for those seeking to understand how and why higher education has regressed in recent years, and why it is important to pay attention to it even if the reader is not in college or sending a child to college any time soon. . . . Kirk begins by noting that he was shocked upon realizing he would need security in order to do something as simple as deliver remarks in front of an audience at a university. It is also important to note that this realization — as well as every other example in Kirk’s book — is not isolated to one, or even a few schools. It is, unfortunately, true at an ever-growing list of universities across the country. Universities were once a beacon of free speech, but today, measures are being put in place to stifle speech under the guise of 'protecting' students. Kirk laces his book with not only his personal confrontations with these policies but those of the student members of TPUSA*. Today, speech is subdued by creating and implementing concepts such as 'free speech zones,' 'safe spaces,' and 'trigger warnings,' among many others. These all act to censor speech and shield students from hearing opinions that differ from their own." Today, one can purchase Kirk's book. But if liberal crazies get their way, tomorrow such books—that are not politically correct—will be burned by liberal fanatics
'Here’s another great warrior right here,' Trump said, pointing at Kirk during a White House conference in March. 'You are a great warrior. Thank you. Really is great.' (Trump is Kirk's hero)
"Charlie Kirk, founder and President of Turning Point USA. His new book is Campus Battlefield: How Conservatives Can WIN the Battle on Campus and Why It Matters… The NY Times and the Left are obsessed with 'white men.' The Left thinks skin is identity. That’s a truly racist idea." (Source: Prager 2018-10-11 Campus Battlefield, Dennis Prager, Pragertopia)
". . . our current climate in higher education has many red flags in a field that should be the first to encourage all different points of view rather than attempting to indoctrinate our young people during such an important time in their development. . . . The more we see the name-calling, shouting down, and increased violence among groups who have apparently jumped on the bandwagon of unwarranted hatred that we are sadly experiencing in our great nation and beyond, the more we need to have books like Charlie Kirk's available to us" (Source: Campus Battlefield, Editorial Review)
*Turning Point USA (TPUSA) is an American rightwing, nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to educate students about "true free market values". It was founded in 2012 by conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Its website says it has more than 350 chapters.
Kirk bemoans what's happening to conservative professors and students for the past two decades. They are being fired, oppressed, stopped from being accepted into the colleges and faculties.
Professors are teaching students radical, liberal, anti-America, anti-conservative, anti-white, anti-male and racist PC views that are ludicrously biased and wrong
As Kirk says, "Today, our universities have turned into assembly line manufacturers of militant, close-minded, anti-American young people. The texts and supplemental content are being selected with the intention of re-interpreting American history, Western history, and the history on mankind in general. Course content is being heavily weighted towards globalism and multiculturalism with inconvenient truths being omitted or negatively spun. . . . Opinion polling of university professors across the United States consistently shows them to be overwhelmingly liberal."
Liberal radicals are attempting to rewrite history so it's politically correct—with inconvenient truths omitted
Kirk continues: "This would be acceptable if they were checking their opinions at the classroom door and just encouraging students to think and come to their own conclusions. They are not. Increasingly they have been forcing their opinions onto their students, up to and including failing grades for expressing conservative ideas. . . . The administration at our universities have been complicit in this effort by creating school policies that stifle dissent, allow free speech only in certain designated campus areas, permit disruptive and sometimes violent protests, and establish codes of behavior and speech that label dissent as hate and thus subject to disciplinary action." (Source: Charlie Kirk: American universities are now 'mob' assembly lines, Charlie Kirk, Fox News)
Kirk says "Sadly, the powers that run colleges today—the faculty, administration, and some alumni who have mindlessly bought the prevailing authoritarian and leftist agenda—no longer believe a college is a place where different ideas are taught, expressed and challenged. They have become leftist echo chambers that reinforce an anti-American, anti-freedom, pro-Marxist worldview. The institutional dominance the left enjoys did not happen overnight. The left doggedly planned for decades to take over our high schools and our colleges. The left relentlessly and incrementally pounded its credos into the minds of generations of students. And today we are seeing the disastrous results."
Kirk is right and the liberals are wrong. Their assault on freedom of speech is one of the stupidest mistakes in the history of political activism. He and Turning Point USA are bravely attempting to be an antidote for liberal PC dogma. It is a very honorable mission and the fact that liberal activists are harrassing him means that they're scared. Good!

Kirk asks us "If America is so bad, why do so many people want in? Millions are so anxious to come to America that they’re literally climbing over fences, swimming rivers, and figuratively busting down doors. Those are just the illegal immigrants. Add to that the millions who come to America legally, waiting patiently for their immigration paperwork to clear."

"This is a must-read book to understand the aggressive Republican agenda on the campuses in the years to come. . . . If the leftist corruption of the ideas of liberty, free speech, and economic freedom now so common on college campuses comes to dominate the nation’s outlook, as the left intends, this will not be a country that the Founding Fathers would recognize. It will be unrecognizable to all of us, who as Americans grew up enjoying the very freedom that they now are trying to destroy.” He concludes “We are at war for the soul of our country, and it’s a fight we must win before it is too late.” (Source: Taking Republican war to the American campuses, Donald J. Where will brainwashed blacks be when people come out of their PC-obsessed daze and reject black skin privilege and white skin privilege and go back to being nonracist?
Charlie Kirk is the Founder and Executive Director of Turning Point USA, a national student movement dedicated to identifying, organizing, and empowering young people to promote the principles of free markets and limited government.
Since the inception of Turning Point USA in June 2012, Charlie has grown Turning Point USA from nothing, to having representation on over 1,100 high schools and college campuses nationwide, with over seventy-five full time field staff.
At twenty-four years old, he has appeared on Fox News, CNBC, and FOX Business News over two hundred times.
The culture war happening on college campuses every single day is a war in which there is a lot of hate speech directed at white males, the Founders, and any and all conservatives. The war isn't fair since the administrations and deans and professors keep getting more ammunition while the conservatives are being disarmed constantly, not to mention undermined and sabotaged. Suppression of free speech by the authoritarian left has become a dangerous movement on college campuses all over America. Scheduled speakers are abused and threatened, sometimes being prevented from speaking or assaulted. Open classroom discussion is stifled. Conservative students are intimidated. This sounds like tyranny so you may wonder what such militant tactics are doing in schools. Whatever happened to our DEMOCRACY?! What indeed.
April 8, 2005: David Horowitz was hit in the face with a pie Wednesday during a speech at Butler University. The attack was the third incident in the last 10 days in which a conservative speaker has been doused with food while trying to speak on a Midwestern campus. SJWs are going insane and getting violent and crazy. Where exactly is these conservative speakers' "social justice"?
The campuses are filled with a combination of liberal and conservative students. The colleges themselves act like these institutions exist for only one purpose: brainwashing the conservative values out of students and replacing them with liberal ones. In the process, the merely liberal young people were turned into radical, fanatic, guilty, hateful progressives and some of these joined Antifa thug squads whose job it was to threaten, intimidate, and even assault conservative speakers and professors.

It is as if they were imitating Chairman Mao Zedong's Red Guards from around 1966, who subjected anyone perceived as "bourgeois" or "revisionist" to brutal mental and physical attacks and humiliations. The 2018 liberal U.S. activists hate, threaten, intimidate, humiliate and even assault conservative speakers and professors who hold different points of view than they do. Red Guards: ". . . we were born with hatred, and taught to struggle and hate everyone. Some of my fellow Red Guards argue that we were just innocent children led astray. But we were wrong," said Yu Xiangzhen, a former Red Guard. In 2018, our colleges breed hate as they indoctrinate young people with hatred toward old white men like the Founders, and loathing for everything conservative.
Mao's Little Red Book was used to help him gain tighter control of China. It contained propaganda in the form of brief slogans. Today, in the USA those self-righteous liberal radical dogmatism slogans would be garbage like Whites are victimizers but blacks are victims
"I want to tell the truths of the Cultural Revolution as someone who lived through the madness and chaos, to warn people of the spectacular destructiveness, so that we can avoid ever repeating it. Fifty years on, however, I am worried by the increasing leader-worship we see in state media, similar to the ideological fervor that surrounded Mao. We must stay vigilant. We can't have the gruesome brutality of the Cultural Revolution start again," said Yu Xiangzhen. (Source: Confessions of a Red Guard, 50 years after China's Cultural Revolution, Yu Xiangzhen, CNN)
Mao's Little Red Book was used to help him gain tighter control of China. It contained propaganda in the form of brief slogans. Today, in the USA those self-righteous liberal radical dogmatism slogans would be garbage like:
- Whites are victimizers but blacks are victims
- Conservative thought is wrong so conservatives must be threatened, intimidated, humiliated and even assaulted if that is needed to keep them quiet
- Free speech is only for liberals
- There are two types of people, evil people and those who believe the political correctness bible (comparable to Mao's Little Red Book)
- We need a diversity in our culture but not in our thought. Our thinking needs to be PC liberal and nothing else because all other ideas are wrong and evil
- Young people need to be indoctrinated, not taught
- Blacks cannot possibly be racist
- And other ludicrous liberal propaganda . . .
Will liberals and radical progressives a generation from now be looking back on the civil war they caused (sometime in the 2020s) and bemoaning where their self-righteous radical dogmatism led?
All this suggests the question: Will liberals and radical progressives a generation from now be looking back on the civil war they caused (sometime in the 2020s) and bemoaning where their self-righteous radical dogmatism led? Will they end up like these former Red Guards, overcome with guilt, wishing they had acted like students, not thugs? Will they be obsessed with not repeating these tragic mistakes? Because if there is one thing that EVERYONE can learn from history, it's that those who will not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.
Like Mao's Red Guards, the 2018 liberal U.S. activists hate, threaten, intimidate, humiliate and even assault conservative speakers and professors who hold different points of view than they do.
There is a reason why college in a democracy is supposed to be about respect, openmindedness, tolerance, and learning to listen to and seriously think about others' points of view: Democracy sickens and dies when there is no free speech and First Amendment rights, but instead disrespect, hate, closedmindedness, intolerance, and the dogmatic rewriting of history by fanatic bigots who are nowhere near as smart as they think they are.
