Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt: Toward a Secular Theocracy
a book by Paul Edward Gottfried
(our site's book review)
The Amazon blurb says that Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt: Toward a Secular Theocracy extends Paul Gottfried’s examination of Western managerial government’s growth in the last third of the twentieth century. Linking multiculturalism to a distinctive political and religious context, the book argues that welfare-state democracy, unlike bourgeois liberalism, has rejected the once conventional distinction between government and civil society.
Gottfried argues that the West’s relentless celebrations of diversity have resulted in the downgrading of the once dominant Western culture. The moral rationale of government has become the consciousness-raising of a presumed majority population. While welfare states continue to provide entitlements and fulfill the other material programs of older welfare regimes, they have ceased to make qualitative leaps in the direction of social democracy. For the new political elite, nationalization and income redistributions have become less significant than controlling the speech and thought of democratic citizens. An escalating hostility toward the bourgeois Christian past, explicit or at least implicit in the policies undertaken by the West and urged by the media, is characteristic of what Gottfried labels an emerging “therapeutic” state.
For the new political elite, nationalization and income redistributions have become less significant than controlling the speech and thought of democratic citizens; our 'therapeutic' state's social engineers are sending out the thought police
For Gottfried, acceptance of an intrusive political correctness has transformed the religious consciousness of Western, particularly Protestant, society. The casting of “true” Christianity as a religion of sensitivity only toward victims has created a precondition for extensive social engineering. Gottfried examines late-twentieth-century liberal Christianity as the promoter of the politics of guilt. Metaphysical guilt has been transformed into self-abasement in relation to the “suffering just” identified with racial, cultural, and lifestyle minorities. Unlike earlier proponents of religious liberalism, the therapeutic statists oppose anything, including empirical knowledge, that impedes the expression of social and cultural guilt in an effort to raise the self-esteem of designated victims.
However, to the degree the minority citizens buy into this humiliating victimology nonsense, to that degree they will commence actually being victims to please neurotic white elites who believe they have something to be guilty about. And the fact that this perverse new religion of guilt is being taught in schools and universities instead of legitimate knowlege is a national tragedy in not just the USA but also much of Europe. This is by far the worst and sickest cultural export the U.S. has ever cursed the world with.
The neurotic do-gooder white elites have finally gone off the deep end, and while they tell black families they are helping them, they're actually leading them into a trap of permanent victimhood and unquenchable anger
Equally troubling to Gottfried is the growth of an American empire that is influencing European values and fashions. Europeans have begun, he says, to embrace the multicultural movement that originated with American liberal Protestantism’s emphasis on diversity as essential for democracy. He sees Europeans bringing authoritarian zeal to enforcing ideas and behavior imported from the United States.
Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt: Toward a Secular Theocracy extends the arguments of the author’s earlier After Liberalism. Whether one challenges or supports Gottfried’s conclusions, all will profit from a careful reading of this latest diagnosis of the American condition.
"For those who can handle the truth, Paul Edward Gottfried serves as a fusion of Aristotle, Joseph de Maistre, and Carl Schmitt. What Aristotle did for the Greek polis, Gottfried has done for the nation-states of the West. . . . Gottfried makes a compelling case that political correctness has become a substitute for Christianity."—Chronicles

If political correctness has become a substitute for Christianity, who will be the first entrepreneur to create The Church of Political Correctness and start roping in the suckers to utilize confessional booths that have coin-operated doors that let you in only if you pay your offering—conveniently avoiding collection plate nonsense? It will be easy to get speakers to lay guilt on the congregations for not tithing 10% of their money to the church. They can show videos of the TV program Black Jesus, the hi-jinks of a street-smart savior living in modern-day Compton, on a mission to spread love and kindness throughout the crime-ridden L.A. neighborhood with his small group of followers. And, of course, the suffering victim on the cross behind the podium is African-American! This epitomizes the mind-set of the new PC religion of whites as victimizers and blacks as victims.

Paul Edward Gottfried is Professor of Humanities at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. He is the author of After Liberalism: Mass Democracy in the Managerial State and The Search for Historical Meaning: Hegel and the Postwar American Right. Gottfried—a reactionary, right-winger, paleoconservative, and right-wing pluralist—is wisely opposed to nation-building and is an avid critic of American interventionist foreign policy. He has flung unrelenting denunciations of neoconservatives and the Republican Party. He is president of the paleoconservative The HL Mencken Club, a society for the independent Right.
Gottfried’s theory holds that "America is no longer a republic or a liberal democracy—categories that lost their meaning after the postindustrial explosion of bureaucratic apparatuses transformed the country into a “therapeutic managerial state.” Today, we are ruled by a class of managers who dress like bureaucrats but act like priests. This technocratic clerisy justifies its status by enforcing Progressive precepts like multiculturalism and political correctness, which pit different groups against each other as if they were religious edicts. As Gottfried tells it he was banished from the mainstream of political discourse for rejecting this liberal catechism. Now, versions of the same ideas that Gottfried says got him banished will be gospel in Trump’s White House."

PC culture divided society into victims and victimizers, demonizing whites and deifying blacks
Gottfried identifies three defining characteristics of the therapeutic regime: “the attempt to present as mere psychological and educational matters what are increasingly intrusive uses of government power to alter social behavior; dividing society into victims and non-victims (or victimizers); and a politics of disposition, in which ‘sensitivity’ becomes the decisive issue for drawing friend-enemy distinctions.” As society secularizes, it replaces religion for those who are nonreligious with the political correctness disease. To secure its position, the managerial state imposes an ideological orthodoxy on the society.
To secure what position? Control of speech and behavior in order to control society. The state does not "suggest" multiculturalism. It imposes multiculturalism. This heavy-handed approach allows elites to enforce their "therapeutic regime." This fascist context of tromping on our freedoms and rights in the name of multicultural justice helps the elites work off their white guilt for being sinful privileged whites of the oppressor class who are seen to be still oppressing, although they would be hard pressed to give an example of such victimization. In truth, they are doing no such thing, but the new mythology of their new political correctness religion says they are, so they take this "on faith"!
Multicultural justice helps the elites work off their white guilt for being sinful privileged whites of the oppressor class who are seen to still be oppressing blacks so therefore blacks should turn the tables and oppress them
For example, they take "on faith" the idea that there is an epidemic of white on black crime which they should be guilty for—they are victimizers. IN ACTUAL FACT, THE EXACT OPPOSITE IS HAPPENING: there is an epidemic of black on white crime which the blacks should be ashamed of. When either whites or blacks are confronted with the real proven statistics on the matter, this is taken as heresy. In fact, the mainstream media won't allow such heresy on the airwaves, in the press, or on the internet. All news gets filtered through a filter of multiculturalist political correctness, and anything not conforming to the new secular religion in which whites are victimizing blacks is censored out of existence. This makes the mainstream media a mere propaganda machine having only a passing relationship to truth or reality. Trump wants no part of the new multiculturalist political correctness religion, and keeps accusing the mainstream media of fake news. We cannot believe we're saying this, but PERHAPS DONALD TRUMP ACTUALLY HAS A POINT!!!!! See:

The media's desperate attempt to sell this utterly fraudulent narrative of violence AGAINST blacks, while willfully and consciously ignoring the tidal-wave of violence committed BY blacks, is criminal
Campus leftists don't believe in free speech. Social justice warriors (SJWs), in a politically correct trance of self-righteousness, believe in one-sided free speech. All speech is fine, as long as it is what THEY believe. You either parrot back to them their PC beliefs or you'll be harassed, trolled, insulted, attacked with pie in the face, or physically assaulted. They have no concept of free speech, which they believe should be a right that only those that are PC SJWs should enjoy. Why their teachers are failing to show them the error of their ways is a mystery.
What happens to the "heretics" (brave heroes) who tell the actual TRUTH about such matters, such as David Horowitz?
April 8, 2005: David Horowitz was hit in the face with a pie Wednesday during a speech at Butler University. The attack was the third incident in the last 10 days in which a conservative speaker has been doused with food while trying to speak on a Midwestern campus. SJWs are going insane and getting violent and crazy in a "religious fervor." But where exactly is these conservative speakers' "social justice"?
"The corruption of American higher education has been in the news a lot in the last few years. “Snowflakes” and 'safe spaces,' crowds of thugs shutting down conservative speakers, craven administrators caving in to demands of activist students and faculty have become increasingly common since the rise of Donald Trump sparked a 'resistance' movement. . . . What David Horowitz has been warning about in his books and speeches for more than thirty years -- the ideological hijacking of the university and the betrayal of its traditional mission -- has finally grabbed the national spotlight." The main difference between the political correctness heretics in 2018 and those acting centuries ago is that in the past, heretics (a.k.a. witches) were burned at the stake. Today they are assaulted, demoted, harrassed, trolled, pied, swarmed, fired, censured, insulted, and badmouthed. Who are the inquisitors who mete out punishment to these truth-telling "heretics"? People like the Social justice warriors and Antifa, the multiculturalist political correctness religion's hit squads.

"Gottfried differs from most other critics in his stress upon governmental promotion of multiculturalism: "For all their complaints about 'political correctness,' moderate conservatives . . . do not devote their primary attention to the government's control of speech and behavior. . . . [Gottfried holds that] multiculturalism is a perversion of morality. It is an instance of what Carl Schmitt called 'the tyranny of values,' i.e., an attempt to elevate an arbitrary preference to the status of a binding, objective judgment and on that basis forcibly to impose it on society. . . . But this raises yet another question: why does the state seek to impose multiculturalism? Gottfried argues that it does so in order to control society . . . . As both the protector of designated victims and the sensitizer of consciousness, this expanding state is authorized to make constant interventions, directly or indirectly, in a wide range of human and commercial relations. . . . The managerial state wishes to weaken, if not cripple altogether, any social group not under its control. The favored minorities who benefit from multiculturalism depend entirely on the state for their enhanced position. . . . To secure its position, the managerial state imposes an ideological orthodoxy. This in effect becomes the state religion and nonbelievers fare no better than heretics customarily do." "Paul Edward Gottfried has produced a neoconservative book on the relationship between multiculturalism and the welfare state. Gottfried's main argument is that the welfare state has become a therapeutic, consciousness-raising system overly concerned with sensitizing the public's social attitudes. For Gottfried, welfare-state democracy is reinforced through the politics of late twentieth-century liberal Christianity, which promotes metaphysical guilt. The result is a 'managerial government' held hostage to minorities, the so-called 'designated victims' of the current social regime. . . . his argument comes with a visible anxiety about the possibility that the 'racial others' of multiculturalism will devour the 'present regime.' . . . Gottfried offers a critique of the state's commitment to individuals and its resolve to grant 'disadvantaged victims' emancipation from an oppressive past. Such politics, according to Gottfried, require the extension of statist [concentrating extensive economic, political, and related controls in the state at the cost of individual liberty] forms of behavior control." Bored with normal religions, multiculturalism fanatics created a new religion, a secular theocracy based on Political Correctness
"This quietly and learnedly devastating appraisal of Political Correctness in all its forms has been undertaken by [Paul Edward Gottfried]. . . . 'Neither social engineering as a political project nor the victim-therapy practised and exported by the American political class would be enjoying its present status without a deformed Protestant culture. The stress on individual salvation, unmediated by ecclesiastical authorities, prepared the way for a late modern society, without strong communal ties or respect for a collective past.' . . . How much is Political Correctness really a type of "Protestant deformation"? The inroads it has made among American Catholics are, as Professor Gottfried's evidence shows, alarming" (Source: Book Review: Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt: Toward a Secular Theocracy, R. J. Stove, National Observer)
"Author Paul Gottfried did not at all let me down and in fact has brought new energy to my fascination with the nature of the Politically Correct sociological atmosphere that surrounds us. . . . I was shocked at the extent to which these trends are managed by the liberal elite who seek to engage in various levels of social engineering and cultural mindset shifts. . . . With their popular social gospel and social justice, the roots of the modern PC movement were founded early on. . . . But the managerial state eventually gave way to a different kind of state, with new classes of victims and new programs to fix the 'problems.' The new costume that the state has put on is what Gottfried refers to as 'the therapeutic state.' . . . he discusses the rise of an emphasis in state-driven 'multicultural educational plans' and stiff laws against 'insensitive speech and writing.' . . . [elites have set it up so] there will forever be a need for the state’s oversight across the entire society to reinforce political correctness and sensible speech and content. He also explains some of the influences which made this arrangement into a 'starkly totalitarian' one. . . . If you, for instance, disagree with the idea that the state should make specific efforts to ensure that the “representation” of minorities is equal in universities, you are dismissed as a racist and hateful right winger, regardless of the actual logic of your objection." "In an age in which many so-called conservatives are deathly afraid of stating their views openly, or of going beyond any but the mildest critiques of current-day society, Gottfried's book is highly refreshing. . . . These American liberal Protestant outlooks have spread into Europe, where the more Protestant countries, such as Germany, tend to be further along the road of coercive political-correctness. Gottfried reveals the startling fact that 'more Germans are now languishing in prison for expressing (unprogressive or insensitive) opinions than there were in East Germany before the fall of the Communist regime.' . . . the broad masses are clearly far less interested in political-correctness than the New Class cadres . . . Professor Gottfried has given us the razor-sharp theory; the "poetry" of resistance to the managerial-therapeutic regime . . ." Today in most western countries, public speech and written publications that unsettle ethnic and racial minorities have undergone the process of criminalization—and, logically, book burnings are imminent
"Gottfried’s thesis is that western governments have built upon a bastardized version of protestant beliefs to incorporate them into the education and acculturation of the citizenry. . . . Prejudice . . . is a sickness that, we are assured, only public administration, is equipped adequately to deal with. In this special pleading, dressed up as clinical analysis, administrators are charged with social healing. . . . Today in most western countries, public speech and written publications that unsettle ethnic and racial minorities have undergone the process of criminalization." Christopher Lasch, in The Revolt of the Elites, rightfully takes to task the elites for adopting political correctness, emphasizing rights over responsibilities, buying into social engineering as a quick fix for social dysfunction, and designating certain minority groups as poor victims of oppression, and then forbidding normal standards of conduct and education to be imposed on these groups.

Edward O. Wilson bewails cultural relativism, which leads to political multiculturalism, identity politics, and—worst of all—political correctness. No culture, idea, artifact, cultural practice or child-raising tactic is better than any other; they’re all simply different from each other, say the relativists. We and Wilson strongly disagree.
President Trump believes that by being politically correct, Americans are blind to facts and therefore putting our nation in danger. “They have put political correctness above common sense, above your safety, and above all else,” the President declared after a Muslim gunman killed 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando. “I refuse to be politically correct.” (Good for him!) "Political correctness is a weapon used to silence people who tell the truth." says Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Glenn Beck says "Political correctness doesn't change us, it shuts us up."

A great deal of learning and unity is lost to the oneupmanship of students who attempt to curry favor by being the most political correct multiculturalist of all. Where once there was learning there now is striking a pose
The fact that this multicultural madness is supported by the administration and safe spaces and microaggressions are the words de jour is a sad commentary on bleeding heart liberal instincts crossing the border into madness. How the administrations could have been bullied into submission this way speaks little about their moral superiority but volumes about their cowardice. The spectacle of blacks who feel victimized constantly so they are watching every word and expression of everyone in academia is made worse as nonblack sudents find themselves jumping through hoops to please this "victimized" class, severely interfering with learning. The problem here is that few of the blacks are victims of anything except racebaiters like Al Sharpton who keep this issue alive to enhance their own power.
The Black Lives Matter farce is a case in point. Of course black lives matter—that is not the point, nor was it up for discussion since it's obvious. 'Don't Make the Black Kids Angry': The hoax of black victimization and those who enable it gives us data that disproves the hoax of black victimization. We like and appreciate all races equally and would be the first to holler if racism against blacks was making a comeback. But it isn't. Quite the reverse. Obama's racism toward whites and Hillary's plan to keep the "whites are victimizers" baloney going so offended the whites who'd had a bellyfull of this nonsense that she handed the election to Trump.
Obama's racism toward whites and Hillary's plan to keep the 'whites are victimizers' baloney going so offended the whites who'd had a bellyfull of this nonsense that she handed the election to Trump, shooting herself in the foot
Bleeding-heart liberals are always looking for a cause to latch onto so these do-gooders can see if they can do something good about it to make themselves feel good inside, which is all right by us, especially if they hit on worthwhille causes to champion. But in the case of these trumped up racism claims, the do-gooders became victims of a hoax which the cynical perpetrators exploited for their own nefarious purposes. There is a substantial amount of racism in most cultures, including the USA. But the proposition that it is mostly white-on-black racism is a fraud. In truth, for the last few years the amount of black-on-white racism has surged way ahead of white-on-black racism, racebaiter Al Sharpton's prevarications and spinning to the contrary.
Neil Postman is, like us, fed up with the modern white victimizer black victim concept Obama pushed in his presidency and Hillary foolishly planned to continue. Clinton did not have an economic message that appealed to voters in the states that ended up deciding the election. Trump did—and he wasn't even a politician. Hillary's "Stronger Together" message brought up the liberal obsession of divisiveness and polarization by indicating its opposite. The message was unpopular and actually divisive in itself as the people were worried about an economy that was leaving many behind, and only Sharpton-brainwashed blacks were thinking racism-victimization thoughts, which Hillary—exposed to Obama's divisiveness for way too long—just couldn't understand.
Think of the Black Lives Matter farce. It suggests that whites hate blacks and are often victimizing them. A lot more white cops were being shot at black hands than blacks were being shot at white hands, so, logically, White Lives Matter or Cops Lives Matter is more accurate and appropriate. But the liberal media wasn't open to expressions of truth or factuality. Racism issues on TV sold more toothpaste and were supported by Sharpton's PACs and accomplices so that's what they went with, regardless of the divisiveness effect it was having and the way it tore a polarized country apart. Surely selling toothpaste is more important! So they kept blurting out spew-buckets of this divisive crap never realizing that they were generating Fake News. If only they'd had the journalistic integrity to investigate the facts and statistics. But no one wanted to look like a fool in the national media so the lies kept coming and the vile victimization hogwash became the conventional wisdom and to argue against it was to appear . . . racist!
Black Lives Matter suggests that whites hate blacks and are often victimizing them, neither of which is true
American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character is insightful to the point of wisdom about multiculturalism and political correctness, which has not only wrecked much of our high school and university educatonal experiences for millions of students, it has created dangerous vulnerabilities in our nation's defense as the stooges in charge prioritize political correctness over national security, just as the school administrators prioritize political correctness over learning.
Multiculturalism is at its worst when used as a gag to strangle free speech
Multiculturalism is at its best when successfully assimilating happy immigrants—including Islamics—into nations, and at its worst when it is used as a garrote to strangle free speech and replace it with the ugliness of political correctness, social justice classes, privilege accusations, safe spaces, and micro-aggressions.

Noticing that we're teaching racist white hatred, racist black skin privilege (affirmative action), and Islamic jihadist tolerance, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that not just the USA but the West in general has been the victim of mass infiltration by culturally degenerate ideas out to bring down our democracy. Russia is known to desire to weaken our democracy to strengthen its own power—or at least its own standing and reputation on the world stage, but the mass infiltration of these ideas seems to us to have been the result of the Left's degeneration into a kind of political correctness sickness that warps thinking until they sink into a gooey hell of microexpressions, white guilt, safe spaces, arguing over racial privilege, and kowtowing to authoritarian oppression by social justice warriors. The dominance of multiculturalism has, on many campuses, bred speech codes, intolerance of opposing opinions and in some cases it has spawned violence against dissidents.
