One Society, One Wissenschaft

an article by Howard Newby

(our site's article review)

Newby anticipates the arrival of the ecological-holistic paradigm (also called the interactive model) to replace or at least balance the mechanistic-reductionistic paradigm (also called the linear model). He acknowledges the integral part that social science will play in understanding the process whereby scientific excellence and technological innovation may lead to economic and social well-being. He sees the unity of knowledge as a Third Wave phenomenon that ameliorates the reductionistic specializing and disunity of the various disciplines of science, especially between social science and hard science.
