The Amazon blurb says that NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The longtime Republican strategist and bestselling author of Everything Trump Touches Dies: A Republican Strategist Gets Real About the Worst President Ever is back with a guidebook for beating Trump’s tricks, traps, and tweets in 2020.
“If you believe America’s future depends on Donald Trump’s political machine being crushed at the polls next year, then Rick Wilson’s Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump--and Democrats from Themselves is a must-read.”—Joe Scarborough, MSNBC
Donald Trump is exactly the disaster we feared for America. Hated by a majority of Americans, Trump’s administration is rocked by daily scandals, and he’s embarrassed us at home and abroad.
Trump can’t win in 2020, right?
Wrong. As 2016 proved, Trump can’t win, but the Democrats can sure as hell lose. Only one thing can save Trump, and that’s a Democratic candidate who runs the race Trump wants them to run instead of the campaign they must run to win in 2020.
Trump is the devil to the leftist radicals
But Trump is a hero to the Republicans and the basket of deplorables
Wilson combines decades of national political experience and insight in his take-no-prisoners analysis, hammering Trump’s destructive and dangerous first term in a case-by-case takedown of the worst president in history and describing the terrifying prospect of four more years of Trump.
Like no one else can, Wilson blows the lid off Trump’s 2020 Republican war machine, showing the exact strategies and tactics they’ll use against the Democratic nominee . . . and how the Democrats can avoid the catastrophe waiting for them if they fall into Trump’s trap.
Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump--and Democrats from Themselves is sharply funny, brutally honest, and infused with Wilson’s biting commentary. It’s a vital indictment of Trump, a no-nonsense, no-holds-barred road map to saving America, and the guide to making Donald Trump a one-term president.
The stakes are too high to do anything less.
Wilson describes how the progressives will overplay their hands in the 2020 election: "You lost to the worst president in history. He didn't beat you; his record, his hideous personal behavior, the reeking cloud of corruption, and his broken economic promises made him unelectable. His divisive, sh*tty, be-worst reign was a stain and an embarrassment. You lost because you made the election into a referendum on policy, not a referendum on Trump. You went into a reality-television contest not understanding the rules, and the master of the genre kicked your ass. In the words of the poet, sage, and philosopher DJ Khaled, 'You played yourself.'"
'You went into a reality-television contest not understanding the rules, and the master of the genre kicked your ass'; and here is Trump telling the Democrats 'YOU'RE FIRED!'
Looking back from late November of 2020, Trump proved that a product doesn't have to be good to outsell the competition—it just has to be sold better, with wiser marketers and strategists. The progressives were dumb enough to stress their candidate's radical platform of budget-busting socialist programs. Trump took all this progressive overreach, twisted it, added lies and exaggerations to it, made the Democrats look like airhead hippies, communists, and out-of-touch idiots, while simultaneously drilling in the same message of keeping America great and looking at all the great progress the country has experienced under Trump's guidance. As Wilson tells it, the Democrats handed Trump the weapon he used to cut off the Democrat's head.
Democrats are very prone to shooting themselves in the foot, like Hillary's 'basket of deplorables' comment
Hillary's 'basket of deplorables' comment was one of the most foolish and avoidable political comments ever uttered
Leftists are pulling out all the stops to gag and censure any conservative speech or speaker
Leftists are pulling out all the stops to gag and censure any conservative speech or speaker
The big problem here is that the left is so sure they are right about everything that they are pulling out all the stops to gag and censure any conservative speech or speaker. The public at large does NOT like this and 80% of them are NOT onboard with all this radical political correctness stuff. See Americans Strongly Dislike PC Culture.
Wilson says "Donald Trump is a bigger threat to America and its future than any democratic president." We totally disagree. The left are trying to take the right of free speech away from conservatives but not liberals, and they are starting to get the sick, ugly political correctness garbage codified into law which will erode citizens' rights like ice on a hot griddle. Trump may not be that great of a president, but he at least had the courage to disparage the curse known as political correctness, which was desperately needed because of the liberals having control of the mass media, Hollywood, and academia, where they were spreading this ugly racist political correctness curse everywhere they went—like a plague. The only reason Wilson doesn't see the danger is that he has obviously bought into this ugly racist political correctness curse, a sad commentary on his thinking and writing.
Wilson sees White House staff as a clown show of the least competent, ethical, sympathetic or appealing staff ever
Wilson sees White House staff as a clown show of the least competent, ethical, sympathetic or appealing staff ever. Has he met Ivanka? She seems to be at least average in competence, ethics, and sympathy, and she is the most appealing woman ever to darken the doors of the White House—a world-class beauty. Wilson, get your glasses changed, then extricate your foot from your pie hole!
Wilson, get your glasses changed, then extricate your foot from your pie hole!
Wilson says "I'm going to tell you these things not merely because I loathe the damage Trump is doing to our nation, or because I think your policies are good for America. If Democrats win, I'm going to hate it rather a lot. But there's more at stake than political and ideological preference now. I'm doing this because the party I worked for, fought for, and sweated over for thirty years didn't just abandon people like me who couldn't stomach Trump; they're putting the entire American experiment at risk. I'm telling you this because Trump and his enablers shredded every ideological predicate that drew me to conservatism and the Republican Party—the old-fashioned stuff like following the Constitution and the rule of law, limits on state power, tradition, honesty, decency, and sanity. I'm doing it because I'm sick of the moral and political contagion he's spread across the country, and sick over the collapse of a once-great party."
Wilson says that it turns out that—in spite of Trump's claims to the contrary—Trump, rather than draining the swamp, is actually stocking the swamp.
Contrary to his promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington, DC, Trump right off the bat filled his cabinet with millionaires and billionaires, from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a Goldman Sachs and hedge fund veteran who made much of his fortune foreclosing on homeowners to billionaire heiress Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who has already put the interests of bankers ahead of debt-burdened students and their families.
Draining the Swamp—Trump promised to 'drain the swamp' in Washington, dumping people who were only there to exploit their positions

Wilson enumerates the endless aspects of Trump's corruption and abuse of power but hopes that we forget about Obama's even worse offenses, including smearing reporters, invasion of privacy, hacking citizen's computers, threats, jailing whistleblowers, using the IRS for intimidation, playing the race card, lying, etc. See:

Rick Wilson was a long time campaign operative for the Republican Party that, in his eyes, has died with the election and butt kissing of Republicans to Trump. It may be true that Trump ran for president to revitalize his brand and his failing image, but he has actually lost money in office, so far. Wilson says that some of his rallies are a couple pointed white hats short of a Klan rally. He says Trump's attacks on "the squad" are unjustified racist hate speech, but refuses to mention the endless attacks the squad has launched at Trump.

Wilson has a point that Trump seems to be slipping mentally, as illustrated by comparing videos of him speaking a decade ago with current videos. Reagan had marked slippage in his second term, and the evidence is that Trump will too. With Reagan it was Alzheimer's, with Trump it is anyone's guess. As Wilson says, the crazy racist uncle act is not an act, and the orange oligarch continues to control the nuclear arsenal. Sleep tight!

The Trump administration family separation policy is an aspect of US President Donald Trump's immigration policy. The policy was presented to the public as a "zero tolerance" approach intended to deter illegal immigration and to encourage tougher legislation. Under the policy, federal authorities separated children from parents or guardians with whom they had entered the US. The adults were prosecuted and held in federal jails, and the children placed under the supervision of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Since June 2018, despite the official end of the separation policy, hundreds of additional children have been separated from their parents.

Wilson's book Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump--and Democrats from Themselves has more F-bombs per square foot than any other book we've read. The author is a “Never Trumper” who would like to see the Republican Party restored, since it has been hijacked by Trump. Wilson thinks Trump can be defeated in 2020. He predicts that not only would a Trump win be ruinous for the country, but it also would set the stage for a Trump Junior run in 2024 (although we believe mainstream Republicans would choose Nikki Haley over Junior as they are surely fed up with Trump corruption by then). Trump must be stopped NOW, the author declares, in order to prevent a dynasty of rule by the Trump family. The main principle behind any attempt to prevent Trump’s re-election is: the election must be framed as a referendum on Trump. The author claims that policy disagreements among the candidates do not matter. If candidates focus on them, Trump will win. Wilson describes the elections he’s won against Democrats by using the book's tactics.
“Rick Wilson is one of the best political strategists of our times. He knows the calculus of how to win better than a mathematician. This book is going to give some old-school Democrats a little heartburn. But if we want to win in 2020, Wilson’s analysis is a full stop. Period. Read and get to work.”—Donna Brazile, former interim chair, Democratic National Committee
“‘Florida Man Chooses Country Over Party!’ It appears that the Democratic Party’s 2020 election briefing book has been written by a lifelong Republican strategist, and you’re looking at it.”—Brian Williams, MSNBC
“No one understands the nature of Trumpism better than Rick Wilson. He also knows how the Democrats can blow this election. This may be a hard book for some of them to read, but it is a message they absolutely need to hear if they want to beat Donald Trump. In this passionate, witty, insightful, and often hilarious book, Wilson brings tough love and sharp elbows to his urgent warning about the difficulty of defeating a man with no bottom, no shame, and no limits.”—Charles Sykes, author of How the Right Lost Its Mind
“Wilson brilliantly explains how Democrats could lose to Trump’s ‘racist and blisteringly stupid’ campaign message yet again unless they change course now. Drawing upon Wilson’s insights, Americans can take back their government and send the reality-TV host back to Mar-a-Lago once and for all.”—Joe Scarborough, MSNBC
Rick Wilson is a renowned Republican political strategist, writer, speaker, commentator, and ad-maker. He is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Everything Trump Touches Dies. His award-winning column with The Daily Beast is a must-read in the political community. Wilson also writes for The Washington Post, Politico, Rolling Stone, the New York Daily News, The Hill, The Bulwark, and The Spectator. He regularly brings his unique insights to CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. He’s a frequent guest on Real Time with Bill Maher. Wilson lives in Tallahassee, Florida, with his wife, four dogs, and a nameless cat. They have two grown children.
Wilson shows how the Democrats are likely to fall into many traps set by Republicans in the 2020 election—but forewarned is forearmed
". . . while his keen political insights can be difficult to glean through his disdain for his imagined liberal reader, they’re often on-target. Democrats with a high tolerance for invective would do well to consider the book’s fundamental warning that winning in 2020 will require 'put[ting] electoral realities ahead of progressive fantasies.'" "Wilson points to a lot of delusions held by Democrats:
1. This is a national election. No, it is about 15 crucial target states.
2. Policies are a winning campaign issue. No. What Democrats should talk about is how Trump’s evil essence leads him to evil policies.
3. Any decent liberal can win the black vote. No. To win in the electoral college, Dems must have a candidate who gets at least 90 percent as many black votes as Obama.
4. Any progressive liberal can win the youth vote. No. Nobody can be sure of getting youth to vote. Old people vote, not young ones. And old people don’t like progressive slogans. Having grown up in the Cold War, they equate socialism with communism.
5. Most people are repelled by Trump’s daily torrent of lies. No. Many people don’t know what he says is lies. Many people don’t care.
6. People love to hear Democrats preach. No. 'You think you sound compassionate, but it often scans as hectoring. You think you sound righteous, but it too often comes across as one long scold from the political correctness commissars.' In flyover country (which decides the electoral college) voters damn you as 'as condescending jerks.'
Not just Democrats but most Republicans are moderate centrists. This surely means that Bernie Sanders, brought up in a 'red diaper,' has no chance." (Source: Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump—and Democrats from Themselves , Walter Clemens, New York Journal of Books)

"All Democratic presidential campaign managers should run out right now and buy a copy of Rick Wilson’s new book – and then read it out loud to their candidates. . . . Unlike most of the Washington reporters covering Donald Trump, Wilson, a Republican strategist and ad man, wastes no time trying to be fair or balanced about the career criminal who is the temporary occupant of the White House. His advice to Democrats is beautifully summarized in his epilogue: 'Do not, as my party did, underestimate the evil, desperate nature of evil desperate people. Do not come to this fight believing that the Trump team views any action, including outright criminality, as off limits. [The 2020 election] is a battle that decides whether they have an unlimited runway to create a dynastic kleptocracy based on an authoritarian personality cult that makes North Korea look like Sweden, or whether the immune system of the Republic kicks in and purges them from the body public … There is no bottom. There is no shame. There are no limits … He is surrounded by cowards with frightening and tremendous skills …" (Source: Running Against the Devil review: Rick Wilson's anti-Trump missile, Charles Kaiser, the Guardian)
A fairly small fraction of them, like a third maybe, really believe in this crap. Really believe that Trumpism is the new way. They treat him as a king
"Right now there are three categories of Republicans. A fairly small fraction of them, like a third maybe, really believe in this crap. Really believe that Trumpism is the new way. They treat him as a king. A third of the Republicans are terrified of the guy. They are so scared of a tweet that they hide under their covers every day. And a third of them are like opportunists. They want the judges, they want the regulations for their donors, that sort of crap. . . . I'm willing to make sacrifices in the short term and do things that maybe aren't my ideological cup of tea in order to ensure that this country, as an experiment, survives. Because what's the alternative? We're going to slip into an authoritarian nationalism. . . . he's a master of demagoguery. He's a master at propaganda." If we let Trump follow his instincts, all is lost and fascistic stormtroopers will be goosestepping their way to our door as we slip into an authoritarian nationalism led by demagogue Trump
"As a conservative strategist against Trump, Wilson critiques what he sees as Democrats’ inability to run the campaign and candidate needed to beat Trump."—Melissa Caen, Commonwealth Club
"They're calling it the 'Death Star.' While supporters of the various Democratic candidates for president pummel each other online, Grand Moff Brad Parscale, Donald Trump's campaign manager, is deploying this appropriately nicknamed $1 billion disinformation machine with the real potential to obliterate even the most perfect Democratic ticket this fall. For starters. Among other things, this raises an extraordinarily important question: How exactly do the Democrats fight back against what amounts to a nuclear arsenal of lies and kooky conspiracy theories? . . . [this Death Star has] the purpose of brainwashing millions of American social media users, poisoning their minds by polluting their Facebook feeds with laser-targeted, customized propaganda designed to make sure Trump gets a second term. Coppins calls it 'the most extensive disinformation campaign in U.S. history.'" (Source: How should Democrats fight back against Trump's billion-dollar "Death Star"?, Bob Cesca, Salon)
'Running against the devil' involves not only the forked-tongue demon in the oval office but also the demons in Facebook and Google exploiting their positions
So this is what the Democrats are up against. Trump, to ensure reelection, is planning to cheat. The Russians did it for him in 2016. But Trump's Trumpers—like Brad Parscale—will be schooling the Democrats bigtime in 2020. "Insanely, Facebook has opened its doors and welcomed Trump's Death Star into our timelines. Mark Zuckerberg's stupefying decision to allow deliberately false political advertisements on his increasingly toxic platform." Wasn't the internet supposed to enhance democracy? Now, due to power hungry oligarchs at Facebook and Google exploiting their positions, the election will once again be tainted and twisted into a caricature of democracy, like happened in 2016.
