Our take on a review of Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty

Washington D.C.—where the government is found
John McClaughry reviews James Bovard’s book, Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty. Both author and reviewer conclude that we are losing our liberties and no organized force or leadership is working to reverse this scary trend. There is too much government. “Since 1985, federal, state, and local governments have seized the property of over 200,000 Americans under asset seizure laws, often with no more evidence of wrongdoing than an unsubstantiated assertion made by an anonymous government informant.” A small businessman was forced to pay a $145,000 fine because he didn’t have 8.45 blacks on his payroll. Banking regulators can seize assets of citizens for allegedly violating banking regulations.

Money has corrupted everything in Washington and we need to face up to these pervasive failures and to radically reduce government officials’ power to coerce, expropriate, and subjugate other Americans
“The time has come to face up to the pervasive failures and to radically reduce government officials’ power to coerce, expropriate, and subjugate other Americans. The American people placed its faith in the State, and the State failed. We need a new faith in individual liberty,” says Bovard. Since the Patriot Act and the massive NSA surveillance, individual liberty and privacy are turning into words to find in history books—but not words that will be found in current events.
