The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data

a book by Kevin Mitnick

(our site's book review)

Kevin Mitnick Would Like to Help You Disappear

The Amazon book description on this book says: Be online without leaving a trace. Your every step online is being tracked and stored, and your identity literally stolen. Big companies and big governments want to know and exploit what you do, and privacy is a luxury few can afford or understand.

In this explosive yet practical book, Kevin Mitnick uses true-life stories to show exactly what is happening without your knowledge, teaching you "the art of invisibility"—online and real-world tactics to protect you and your family, using easy step-by-step instructions. Reading The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data, you will learn everything from password protection and smart Wi-Fi usage to advanced techniques designed to maximize your anonymity.

Kevin Mitnick knows exactly how you can succeed in the quest for anonymity and avoidance of the nosiness of government surveillance and privacy invasions by social networks, Google, Apple, and trackers
Kevin Mitnick knows exactly how you can succeed in the quest for anonymity and avoidance of the nosiness of government surveillance and privacy invasions by social networks, Google, Apple, and trackers

Kevin Mitnick knows exactly how vulnerabilities can be exploited and just what to do to prevent that from happening. The world's most famous—and formerly the US government's most wanted—computer hacker, he has hacked into some of the country's most powerful and seemingly impenetrable agencies and companies, and at one point was on a three-year run from the FBI. Now Mitnick is reformed and widely regarded as the expert on the subject of computer security.

Invisibility isn't just for superheroes—privacy is a power you deserve and need in the age of Big Brother and Big Data. Minick has gone from hacker to convict to ex-convict to author and computer security expert, and this book gives you the info you need to attain the privacy you deserve.

It's Not Paranoia If They ARE Out to Track You

Mitnick is the author of The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security.

"This book is a great reference book as well as great read with real eye-opening information about the world of security. There is much you can learn from this book about protecting your privacy online, in your home and in public." (Source: The Art of Invisibility by Kevin Mitnick Book Review, Brandon Lipani)

"In a world where your smart TV can spy on you and your cellphone can reveal your location to any party with the ability to download tracking software, the odds are that your data is…well, compromised is the least of it. . . . Among the other techniques he suggests are using a passphrase instead of a password, made up of information only you can know, behind a virtual private network, encrypted phone calls, and two-factor authorization" (Source: THE ART OF INVISIBILITY: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data, Kirkus Reviews)

[Mitnick says] "It's not just that the Web is the most convenient way to do things; the Web is becoming the only way to do things. But the internet is also more convenient for criminals, those who would steal your credit, file fraudulent tax returns, or publish compromising information for the whole world to see. . . . What I want to do in this book is really help the reader understand that the only thing that's going to really protect their communications is encryption, if it's implemented right." [He also hacked into security software and found backdoors and weak encryption, and he investigated VPN services which say they don't keep any logs and they protect your privacy, and not even the cops could force them to turn anything over, none of which is true.] (Source: Trust No One: Privacy 101 from "The Art of Invisibility", Jon Foro, Omnivoracious)

". . . this is a great book for US citizens that are slightly more technical than average, or that hope to become so. It’s not exactly ideal for black hats, real criminals, or people at odds with the police state. For those, I’d still recommend this book, but you’d certainly need to take your education further building on the foundation Kevin covers here . . . " (Source: The Art of Invisibility: The World’s Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data by Kevin Mitnick, Michael Blaine Faulkner, Cygonx)

"[Mitnick goes] into great detail providing the steps one should take if the goal is to develop an online presence that is untraceable to your real identity. The process is not simple nor for the faint of heart. All it takes is one moment of inattention to compromise everything you worked so hard to protect."(Source: Book Review: The Art of Invisibility by Kevin Mitnick, Jim Nitterauer)

The Book Teaches You How to Be Safe and Invisible Online

"The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data is essentially divided in two. The first half details how to secure your own life. So choosing secure passwords, which public networks are safe, protecting your online banking, blocking ads and transaction tracking. That kind of thing. It’s very Android and Windows focused. . . . social engineering is a huge part of hacking and online security. It’s easy to pretend to be someone and talk a receptionist into handing over details. . . . This second part is where Kevin teaches the art of invisibility. The first part of the book shows some tips, but this shows how to totally disappear. . . . Buy it, read it, action it, then share it with your family and friends. Democracy needs you to." (Source: The Art of Invisibility by Kevin Mitnick – Book Review, Bianca Smith, tapdancingspiders)

''How would it feel to find out that your neighbor and friend has secretly observed you in your own home for years? The place that should be most private to you was not, and the intruder's devices themselves weren't something you'd ever have thought to look for. This kind of behavior is the opposite of giving normal people freedom and security, of valuing and respecting them as humans--and it's happening more and more. The answer to peeping eyes and cyber theft is to move society toward greater cyber-security and it all starts with essential education about being private and invisible in our daily lives. Kevin's book is the must read in this new world.''—Steve Wozniak, cofounder, Apple Inc.

Our Government Watches Your Every Move, and So Do the 100+ Tracking Companies

Security cameras watch you everywhere—apparently not only Santa is checking whether you're naughty or nice
Security cameras watch you everywhere—apparently not only Santa is checking whether you're naughty or nice

Security cameras, surveillance of your financial transactions, radio frequency spy chips hidden in consumer products, tracking of your Internet searches, and eavesdropping on your e-mail and phone calls. Without your knowledge or consent, every aspect of your life is observed and recorded. But who is watching the watchers? Whatever happened to our Constitutional protections or our rights to privacy? The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data is a great read for anyone who desires to begin enhancing their privacy in a time when we are all trading it away for "free" services. (Did you really think Google and Facebook and YouTube were without cost to you?) Most of the information in this book is not new to hackers but it is to the guy on the street. Mitnick's prose is engaging, and he tells a good story while he lets you know that Big Brother is always watching you (thank you Edward Snowden!).

The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data has great explanations about privacy in the age of computers. Mitnick provides tons of useful information about invisibility. If you wish to go to the extreme to protect your privacy, or just learn how to be more sensible with your personal information, he tells you how to go about it.

Why are we being so persistently tracked? Two major reasons recur throughout the supremely educational The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data that answer the why. Reason one is surveillance. Reason two is advertising/marketing. Over 100 companies track you on the Internet, whether you like it or not. Big Brother—hell. We're talking Big Mob!

"There is no way, through the companies' own self-regulatory apparatus, to stop being tracked online. None. . . . users do not have the right to *not* be tracked. . . . The only right that online advertisers are willing to give users is the ability not to have ads served to them based on their web histories. . . . [most visitors to] the Network Advertising Initiative's opt-out page thought that it was 'a website that lets you tell companies not to collect data about you.' [they were wrong] For browser-based 'Do Not Track' tools, a full 61 percent of respondents expected that if they clicked such a button, no data would be collected about them. [wrong again]" (Source: I'm Being Followed: How Google—and 104 Other Companies—Are Tracking Me on the Web, Alexis C. Madrigal, The Atlantic)

Is Trump the Start of the USA Degenerating into 1984?

There are no such things as 'alternative facts' in this universe—they only exist in alternate universes
There are no such things as 'alternative facts' in this universe—they only exist in alternate universes

"So many people were shocked, disturbed or just plain baffled that after barely a week in power the Trump administration was spreading outright lies and embracing dangerous ideas such as “alternative facts” that it’s no wonder the dystopian classic 1984 shot to #1 on Amazon’s bestseller list. After all, George Orwell’s cautionary tale described a society in which 'whatever the Party holds to be truth is truth' and 'the Ministry of Truth' promotes 'doublethink' and 'newspeak.' We thought it timely to repost Stephen Rohde’s (cautionary) review." (Source: Big Brother Is Watching You: Is America Becoming Orwell’s Nightmare?, Stephen Rohde)

In 1984, there were 'thoughtcrimes' that could get you arrested by the thought police, and facial tics /expressions gave them away; they had no thought-detection technology like the pictured van—but they wished they did

In reading 1984 we noticed that Orwell explained how Big Brother was allowed to manipulate people’s lives, even in countries that consider themselves democracies: the creation of a state of perpetual war and all pervasive fear induces people to willingly surrender their rights and liberties and enables the imposition of the surveillance state. If all that doesn't sound familiar, you've had your head in the sand far too long.

Bye-bye rights, hello perpetual war, fear, and surveillance state overreach—if this sounds unfamiliar, get your head out of the sand!

See:

To avoid the 1984 fate of becoming a suffocating and oppressive conformist society, we must stand up for our rights, our democracy, and our privacy; if not us, who? and if not now, when?

If you love this country, resist demagoguery, fascism, oppression, and the death of democracy, rights, privacy, and freedom, and never give up!
If you love this country, resist demagoguery, fascism, oppression, and the death of democracy, rights, privacy, and freedom, and never give up!

In 1984, the Party has two goals: to conquer the whole surface of the earth and to extinguish once and for all the possibility of independent thought. In 2017, the U.S.'s warmongering neocons have declared the phony 'war on terror' a permanent war, and their goal has always been the building of an American Empire better than either the Roman Empire or the British Empire. And in 2017, the U.S.'s Patriot Act has rubber-stamped the government's spying on law-abiding citizens so they can watch our every move. And the possibility of independent thought diminishes by the day as we elect demagogues, neglect education, and squander the Internet's knowledge building potentials opting to instead use it for entertainment, porn, buying of things, and social networking obsessions. If we were trying to turn America into an Idiocracy, we'd do exactly what we are doing. See The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30).

Our Democracy Has Been Replaced by an Oligarchy and Our Rights and Privacy and Democracy Are Swirling the Drain

Total control? Do these neocon fanatics really want to maximize their wealth and power until they attain total control? Yes, and in case it is news to you, they very nearly have total control—our democracy has been replaced by an oligarchy and our rights and privacy and democracy are swirling the drain. To confirm these things, read Noam Chomsky's brilliant book Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power, the very best book of the 21st century (along with The Forest Through The Trees).

If you believe your privacy and identity are safe, think again. A ton more dough is being spent to steal from us and compromise our identities than is being spent trying to keep your privacy and identity safe. A massive cyber security incident at Equifax, one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States, exposed private information belonging to 143 million people. That is nearly half of the U.S. population. OMG—what shall we do?! The best action to take is a credit freeze at all 3 credit monitoring agencies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. If they try to charge you at Equifax, complain, telling them that is unfair since it was their irresponsibility that caused the breach. Insist on a free freeze.

The answer to peeping eyes and cyber theft is to move society toward greater cyber-security and it all starts with essential education about being private and invisible
