The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture

a book by Heather Mac Donald

(our site's book review)

Speech That Challenges the PC Campus Orthodoxies Is Silenced with Brute Force

The Amazon blurb says that By the New York Times bestselling author: a provocative account of the attack on the humanities, the rise of intolerance, and the erosion of serious learning.

America is in crisis, from the university to the workplace. Toxic ideas first spread by higher education have undermined humanistic values, fueled intolerance, and widened divisions in our larger culture. Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton? Oppressive. American history? Tyranny. Professors correcting grammar and spelling, or employers hiring by merit? Racist and sexist. Students emerge into the working world believing that human beings are defined by their skin color, gender, and sexual preference, and that oppression based on these characteristics is the American experience. Speech that challenges these campus orthodoxies is silenced with brute force.

Some Founders had slaves so let's deface their statues and portraits and excise them from history books for offending 2018 campus orthodoxies even though these race-obsessed values were not present in 1776; Founders are turning over in their graves

The Root of the Problem with the PC Culture Is the Erroneous Belief in America’s Endemic Racism and Sexism

The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture argues that the root of this problem is the belief in America’s endemic racism and sexism, a belief that has engendered a metastasizing diversity bureaucracy in society and academia. Diversity commissars denounce meritocratic standards as discriminatory, enforce hiring quotas, and teach students and adults alike to think of themselves as perpetual victims. From #MeToo mania that blurs flirtations with criminal acts, to implicit bias and diversity compliance training that sees racism in every interaction, Heather Mac Donald argues that we are creating a nation of narrowed minds, primed for grievance, and that we are putting our competitive edge at risk.

From #MeToo mania that blurs flirtations with criminal acts, to implicit bias and diversity compliance training that sees racism in every interaction, the U.S. has lost its bearings and floats toward madness

But there is hope in the works of authors, composers, and artists who have long inspired the best in us. Compiling the author’s decades of research and writing on the subject, The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture calls for a return to the classical liberal pursuits of open-minded inquiry and expression, by which everyone can discover a common humanity.

“I read every word Heather Mac Donald writes and always have. She is brilliant and has tons of guts and is an inspiration."—Peggy Noonan, New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize Winner for Commentary

The Universities Have Been Transformed into Factories of Ideology That Mass-Produce Victims

"Why should we care what happens in the Ivory Tower? Because what happens there very soon happens everywhere. Heather Mac Donald warns us: attend to the ideology now dominating the humanities and social sciences. Designed to undermine the integrity of the individual and the state alike, it does just that. The universities have a mandate to produce informed, educated, productive citizens. They have been transformed, instead, into factories of ideology that mass-produce victims, certain in their oppression, searching everywhere for oppressors to blame and to punish. And the ranks of those deemed tyrants and persecutors threaten to swell until every single one of us is deemed guilty in some manner or another. Beware."—Jordan B. Peterson, bestselling author of 12 Rules for Life

Why should we care what happens in the Ivory Tower? Because what happens there very soon happens everywhere. Today they learn X, tomorrow they beat us over the head with X, unless you worship at the church of PC

"Universities justify their privileged position by claiming to be forums for the promotion of clarity, logic, and evidence. Yet their own policies, affecting millions, are too often defended with factual howlers, logical non sequiturs and mindless boilerplate. Heather Mac Donald may not persuade you on every point, but with her spitfire writing and scorn for nonsense she is forcing universities to live up to their own principles."—Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of Enlightenment Now

"Others besides Heather Mac Donald have indicted academia for devastating liberal education, but no one has ever documented the damage as Mac Donald does in The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture. It is crammed with facts and numbers that universities go to great lengths to hide. How she did it is a mystery, but The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture will be my master reference for anything I write on these topics."—Charles Murray, Emeritus Scholar, American Enterprise Institute

"Not since Alan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind has a book so thoroughly exposed the damage done to American institutions--particularly universities--by modern liberalism's glib commitment to 'diversity.' Mac Donald unveils today's true operating principle: that claims of social justice precede the diminishment of Western greatness--a greatness that has (and will continue to) benefit the former victims of Western bigotry. This book is a story of what happens when too much insecurity seeps into a great civilization."—Shelby Steele, author of Shame, White Guilt, and The Content of Our Character

"Compelling...Mac Donald rightly points out that the foundational purpose of a university, the transmission of knowledge to broaden our view of the human experience, is being lost to an ideological fixation on identity."— Washington Examiner

Heather Mac Donald Has Been the Target of Violent Student Protests

Heather Mac Donald is the national bestselling author of The War on Cops, the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, and a contributing editor of City Journal. A former aspiring academic with roots in deconstruction and postmodernism, she has been the target of violent student protest for her work on policing. She holds a B.A. from Yale and an M.A. from Cambridge in English, and a J.D. from Stanford. Her writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New Republic, and Partisan Review, among other publications. She lives in New York.

Notice that violent student protests is the response she gets for factually accurate, well-researched, well-documented work on the violence between cops and blacks. The protests were not because anyone disagreed with her proven facts. Facts are facts and truth is truth. They were because her work on policing and the resultant book did not sing the party tune and toe the party line in which it is alleged that there's lots of white-on-black violence (there isn't) and lots of blacks killed by white cops (there isn't—black citizens are mostly responsible for killings of blacks). Mac Donald contends, “an officer’s chance of getting killed by a black assailant is 18.5 times higher than the chance of an unarmed black person getting killed by a cop.” When police officers in tense and unknown circumstances hesitate to act, they die. Killings of law enforcement officers are up a staggering 70% over the prior year and ambush killings of cops are up nearly 400%. Cops are refusing to enter black neighborhoods and crime is rising until people are moving to other areas of the country.

The Ferguson Tragedy Fit the Liberal Narrative of Whites as Evil Victimizers and Blacks as Innocent Victims—But It Was a Lie!

When has all this happened? The Ferguson tragedy in which the media listened to only one witness—the only one who said the cop had acted wrongly (all the others disagreed). It fit the liberal narrative of whites are evil victimizers and blacks are innocent victims. Once the media spread the Big Lie everywhere, it became truth and the real truth didn't matter. Then a clown named Obama, another one named Jesse Jackson, and another one named Al Sharpton, instead of acting responsibly and getting the real facts and simmering upset blacks down, stoked the flames and before you knew it Ferguson and lots of other cities were rioting and ball players were raising their hands or taking a knee to protest all the whites killing blacks—except it was all a lie.

When the truth is not politically correct, it is excised, as everyone MUST toe the PC party line
When the truth is not politically correct, it is excised, as everyone MUST toe the PC party line

The riots were all based on a lie. So were the media stories. So was the foolish fire-stoking rhetoric coming out of the mouths of people who should have known better, like Obama, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. At a time when the country desperately needed calming infuences, our leaders failed us, causing much needless suffering and death and loss. Heather Mac Donald tells the ACTUAL TRUTH and the politically correct social justice warriors engineered violent student protests. In the PC world, truth and facts are meaningless. Toeing the liberal line is everything and if you don't do it, "we'll make you pay." Folks, liberalism is sick. The hold that the liberals have on Science, Journalism, and Hollywood is not to be challenged! Do these fools understand nothing about democracy and fairness and the Constitution and the First Amendment? Instead of PC indoctrination, their schooling needs to focus on the democratic institutions and concepts of a democratic republic called USA.

NSA surveillance and the 'Patriot Act' burned half the Constitution and First-Amendment-hating student extremists and Antifa are burning the other half

As Mac Donald tells it, "This victimology fuels the sometimes violent efforts to shut down speech that challenges campus orthodoxies. Taught to believe that they are at existential threat from circumambient bias, students equate nonconforming ideas with 'hate speech,' and 'hate speech' with life- threatening conduct that should be punished, censored, and repelled with force if necessary."

This is how the politically correct social justice warriors have discussions; and the guy deserves the clobbering solely on the basis of being a white male—the victimizing class

Protesters at Middlebury College Shouted Down a Speaker, Then Shamelessly Attacked Him and a Professor, Acting Like Street Thugs

Mac Donald describes an event where protesters at Middlebury College shout down a speaker, then shamelessly attack him and a professor, like they were street thugs. There is NO excuse for this type of thing, no matter if "their delicate little feelings got hurt." Having watched a college speech from American Nazi Party leader George Lincoln Rockwell (the "American Hitler") in the mid-1960s, we saw disagreement handled by raising one's hand, getting called on, and expressing an opinion—even passionately. No violence or even insults, in spite of Rockwell's provocateur style. At Middlebury, Vermont, controversial rightwing speaker Charles Murray was shouted down and never even got to speak. The students should have been suspended, but they were not since it might have "hurt their feelings." Uggggh!

Right after this assault, 177 PC professors around the U.S. signed an open letter protesting that the assailants had been disciplined, however minimally. The professors then blamed the Middlebury administration for the violence, since its decision to allow Murray to lecture constituted a 'threat' to students' delicate little feelings. Curiouser and curiouser . . . . Faculty failed to respond to students’ despicable behavior.

Campus leftists don't believe in free speech. Social Justice Warriors, in a politically correct trance of self-righteousness, believe in one-sided free speech. All speech is fine, as long as it is what THEY believe. You either parrot back to them their PC beliefs or you'll be harassed, trolled, insulted, attacked with pie in the face, or physically assaulted. They have no concept of free speech, which they believe should be a right that only those that are PC Social Justice Warriors should enjoy. Why their teachers are failing to show them the error of their ways is a mystery. Soon there will be no such thing as a discussion. There will only be Fox News farces where people talk over each other or even scream. No one will learn anything—they'll just experience emotional catharsis at one another's expense. It is irrelevant whether or not we agree with the far-right things the man—or any person—has to say.

April 8, 2005: David Horowitz was hit in the face with a pie Wednesday during a speech at Butler University. The attack was the third incident in the last 10 days in which a conservative speaker has been doused with food while trying to speak on a Midwestern campus
April 8, 2005: David Horowitz was hit in the face with a pie Wednesday during a speech at Butler University. The attack was the third incident in the last 10 days in which a conservative speaker has been doused with food while trying to speak on a Midwestern campus. SJWs are going insane and getting violent and crazy. Where exactly is these conservative speakers' "social justice"?

Liberals See Ubiquitous Racism, Sexism, Classism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Ableism, Ethnocentrism, and Xenophobia Everywhere Because It Fits the Liberal Narrative

Stating the obvious, Mac Donald says "None of this campus self-pity is justified." American university students are among the most privileged human beings in history. But their [bogus] claim that there is ubiquitous "racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ethnocentrism, and xenophobia" is also present in the non-academic world, and it is being used to censor speakers and concepts that favored victim groups take issue with. Civility is going extinct.

Mac Donald says "Masked anarchists use force to block conservatives from speaking in public forums. The free speech crisis on and off campus will not be solved until the premises of victimology are challenged directly and exposed as fraudulent, as this book aims to do."

For the last half century, colleges and universities have left their true purpose further behind and they're taking the rest of the world with them. The purpose of learning has been replaced by the purpose of indoctrination into the stale-to-the-point-of-fetidness ins and outs of the political correctness fad.

Totalitarianism Could Become the New American Norm If We Don't Stop the PC Police Now

Mac Donald warns that "the students currently stewing in delusional resentments and self-pity will eventually graduate, and some will seize levers of power"—oops! These students' authoritarian suppression—once they have power—will be more dangerous than the paralysis they currently inflict on toadying campus bureaucrats and spineless faculty.

She says "Unless the campus zest for censorship is combated now, what we have always regarded as a precious inheritance could be eroded beyond recognition, and a soft totalitarianism could become the new American norm. A few weeks after my Claremont appearance, black students at Pomona College and neighboring schools in Claremont, California, published an open letter declaring their hostility to free speech—other people’s free speech, that is. The letter shows that the faculty of the Claremont colleges are failing in their most basic educational duties. . . . Absolute rulers seek to crush nonconforming opinion; the censor is the ultimate bulwark of tyrants."

If we allow the Social Justice Warriors to get everyone fired who won't submit to their radical version of PC, all is lost and fascistic stormtroopers will be goosestepping their way to our door

Mac Donald has been a very vocal critic of the Black Lives Matter movement, and was among the first proponents of the "Ferguson effect". She is also an outspoken critic of criminal justice reform, such as the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, which she testified against in October 2015. In a 2018 talk given at Hillsdale College, Mac Donald criticized the "#meToo" social media movement, arguing that it was the latest in a long line of leftist victimhood culture "frenzies." When asked by an audience member whether women who wear revealing bathing suits should share fault with their aggressors in cases of sexual assault, Mac Donald responded: “What you just did would be referred to as slut shaming... Good for you, because sluts should be shamed as far as I am concerned.” She also expressed her distaste for "diversity," positing that it "is prioritized over talent" in the contemporary workplace.

The College Campus's Cult of Fragility Is an Embarrassment to Our Country

". . . two principles now widely accepted on campuses: Anything that can be construed as bigotry and hatred should be so construed, and anything construed as such should be considered evidence of an epidemic. . . . The problem is not anti-intellectualism but the 'un-intellectualism' of a growing cohort of persons who, lacking talents for or training in scholarship, find vocations in micromanaging student behavior in order to combat imagined threats to 'social justice.' . . . In her just-published book The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture, Mac Donald writes that many students have become what tort law practitioners call 'eggshell plaintiffs,' people who make a cult of fragility -- being 'triggered' (i.e., traumatized) by this or that idea of speech." Will America keep dividing and soon resort to open violence, as happened in 1861, starting the Civil War?
Will America keep dividing and soon resort to open violence, as happened in 1861, starting the Civil War?

"Will America keep dividing and soon resort to open violence, as happened in 1861? Or will Americans reunite and bind up our wounds, as we did following the upheavals of the 1930s Great Depression or after the protests of the 1960s? The answer lies within each of us. Every day we will either treat each other as fellow Americans, with far more uniting than dividing us, or we will continue on the present path that eventually ends in something like a hate-filled Iraq, Rwanda, or the Balkans." (Source: Are We on the Verge of Civil War?, Victor Davis Hanson, National Review)

"However the nation ultimately decides to rationalize its chaotic and incoherent immigration system, surely all can agree that, at a minimum, authorities should expel illegal-alien criminals swiftly. Even on the grounds of protecting non-criminal illegal immigrants, we should start by junking sanctuary policies. By stripping cops of what may be their only immediate tool to remove felons from the community, these policies leave law-abiding immigrants prey to crime. But the non-enforcement of immigration laws in general has an even more destructive effect. In many immigrant communities, assimilation into gangs seems to be outstripping assimilation into civic culture. Toddlers are learning to flash gang signals and hate the police, reports the Los Angeles Times." (Source: The Illegal-Alien Crime Wave: Why can’t our immigration authorities deport the hordes of illegal felons in our cities?, Heather Mac Donald, City Journal)
