In Trump's Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP
a book by David M. Drucker
(our site's book review)
The Amazon blurb says that Based on extensive reporting, a Game of Thrones-like telling of what comes next for the factions and families within the Republican Party as they plot for supremacy in the post-Trump era.
With Trump’s four years in the White House now in the rearview, an unprecedented period in American political history is concluded. The transition, however, has set off a mad scramble for control of a Republican Party that for so long has reflected the domineering image of one man—and might even still in the years ahead. Who emerges from the warring factions and familial rivalries that proliferated and quietly festered during Trump’s presidency could determine the fate of the GOP for a generation, and the first hint of what’s to come begins with the 2024 campaign to crown the first Republican nominee, and national party leader, of the post-Trump era.

With Trump’s four years in the White House now in the rearview, an unprecedented period in American political history is concluded
With Trump’s exit, a singular era in American political history has ended—and the Republican Party, whose identity had for so long been centered around one man, will be forced to redefine itself for the future.
Featuring profiles of everyone from Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, and Nikki Haley to Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and those in the Trump family, In Trump's Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP tells the story of a GOP under—and after—the forty-fifth president, and all of those jousting for influence over the party’s direction in the wake of Donald Trump.

In the 2024 debates, we'd expect decrepit old Sleepy Joe to need frequent naps while Trump tells us about America First and Make America Great Again
"David Drucker is a part of a sadly vanishing breed of political reporters who want to know what the story is, not what they wish it would be. David's analysis is fact-driven, superbly sourced and fair-minded. His work is an essential tool for understanding the 2024 landscape."—Chris Stirewalt, author of EVERY MAN A KING
"Even as the avalanche of books looking backwards at the events of the Trump Presidency continues to crush reviewers, David Drucker had the wisdom—to look ahead! The 2024 GOP contest for the right to lead the party in the presidential contest is at least the equal of any modern campaign in suspense and it’s going to take a three tiered platform to get all the candidates on to the debate stage at the same time. Drucker is the only reporter to at least get the list of possible Republican candidates right as 2021 slides towards 2022. That's because he’s a reporter’s reporter. Drucker’s a weekly guest on my radio show simply because he’s always ahead of the curve…and is so again with this book.”—Hugh Hewitt, host of "The Hugh Hewitt Show"

“David Drucker serves up well-reported portraits of a host of Republican and conservative players, neatly capturing their struggles to navigate the strange new world of post-Trump GOP politics. Watching the 2024 hopefuls adapt to the GOP base’s hunger for Trumpian performative populism, racial dog whistling, and own-the-libs bluster is almost enough to make you pity them. Almost.”—Greg Sargent, Washington Post columnist
"This is a book that tries to answer the question we're all asking: What, exactly, is the future of the post-Trump Republican party? An essential read for anybody who cares about our politics and the country's political future."—Eliana Johnson, editor-in-chief, Washington Free Beacon

"Deeply reported, gracefully written, and eminently readable. Hurray for David Drucker!"—Brit Hume, senior political analyst, Fox News Channel
"One man may dominate the race, but In Trump's Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP is a comprehensive and indispensable form guide to the wide field of contenders for what may be a tumultuous Republican presidential contest in 2024."—Gerard Baker, editor-at-large, The Wall Street Journal
A captivating analysis of the field of GOP candidates aiming for the Oval in a post-Trump world. The 2024 Republican primary will undoubtedly determine the direction of the party. With Biden's flagging poll numbers, it will likely determine the direction of the country. Drucker delivers a non-partisan, non-biased depiction of the White House hopefuls, which is saying a lot for a political book written in 2021 about 2024. In Trump's Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP by David M Drucker is a look into those he sees as the front runners for the upcoming presidential race. This book is a good way to prepare yourself for the upcoming campaign. It covers, in depth, Senators Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Larry Hogan, Marco Rubio, former Rep Will Hurd, former VP Mike Pence, former Ambassador/Governor Nikki Haley, Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former President Trump with brief mentions of roughly a dozen other possibilities.
Ambassador/Governor Nikki Haley would make a nice change from Biden, Trump, and Obama—after crooked Hillary and her 2016 witchhunt fraud laid on Trump with the FBI's and media help, it would be great to have a female presidential candidate with actual integrity!
"He’s probably running. And if he does, others won’t. The courage to confront Trump is not in great supply in the Republican Party. . . . At the moment, people seem disappointed with the whiny, social-policy-addled, everyone’s-a-racist Democrats. But a more profound question may be: How long will the very un-American — and largely unjustified — anger and pessimism last? Democrats have argued for decades that America is a cauldron of unfairness and inequality (even Biden, a natural optimist, seems caught in this liberal trap); post-Trump Republicans are now arguing that our civilization is near collapse. The gloom is bipartisan. Our periodic bouts of pessimism past have been tempered by Democrats’ celebration of American diversity and Republicans’ celebration of American enterprise. The very premise of the country is optimistic — that the values we share are more important than whatever divides us. Doom and gloom is an unlikely burden for the most prosperous and impatient nation in human history; anger is difficult to sustain over time." Obama and Biden were both able to lie with a straight face, so they both did a lot of it

Liar-in-chief Joe Biden—how do you tell if Biden is lying? His mouth is moving!
Klein's WaPo take on Drucker's book may or may not represent his true opinion, since if his true written opinion flew in the face of the liberal narrative, he might be canceled and pounding the pavement looking for a new job, and he knows this, so he toed the party line regardless of the violence it may or may not have done to his integrity. "How long will the very un-American — and largely unjustified — anger and pessimism last?" asks Klein. Surely his face was suffused with a sour-lemon pucker as he typed that question! Largely unjustified? Just one look at how much Mr. Biden has wrecked this country in only two years is enough to make honest Americans throw up in their mouths. Everything he could have done wrong he did, and everything he could have done right he messed up. (Except for support for pro-choice causes, which he and the Dems get right and the G.O.P. gets wrong.) Anyway, the word "unjustified" needs to be replaced with the word "well-founded" or at least "justified."

When addressed at all, Republican voters are cast as a braying mob in thrall to the personality cult of a reality TV star, conservative media, Facebook memes, malign foreign influence
"Focused on rivalries and personalities of the Trump administration, few have taken seriously the Republican electorate that chose Donald Trump in the hotly contested primary race of 2016, helped push him over the top by the narrowest of margins that autumn, which mobilized for him again in record numbers four years later, and with which the former president remains steadfastly popular. When addressed at all, Republican voters are cast as a braying mob in thrall to the personality cult of a reality TV star, conservative media, Facebook memes, malign foreign influence, or some combination thereof. . . . Drucker acknowledges the power of Trump’s celebrity status and palpable camera skills, but recognizes that, more important, Trump forced an ideological reconciliation between conservative elites and the Republican base, two groups grown estranged in the preceding decade. This is, in other words, a thoroughly political book. Thank goodness. Helping still further, Drucker is extremely well-sourced and tends to let his interviewees do the talking, including the 45th president himself." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a great presidential candidate—if he runs in 2024
"Washington Examiner correspondent Drucker debuts with an extensively reported yet uneven look at seven politicians, including Donald Trump, who may seek the Republican nomination for president in 2024. In addition to Trump, Drucker focuses on senators Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio; former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley; former vice president Mike Pence; and former CIA director and secretary of state Mike Pompeo. . . . Though Drucker’s selection seems on-target, it’s almost sure to be superseded by future developments (governors Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, who have recently emerged as likely candidates, barely get mentioned)." ‘In Trump’s Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP’ is a good book, avoiding the easy shots at all reporter's favorite target: Donald Trump. One learns a lot about the other Republican contenders, which no other source really tackled. If you are into politics, this book is a definite must-read.
