In 1993, the Neighborhood Salon Association allowed members to phone, write, fax, or email salon directory requests so salon members could contact one another. They also started up email salons, kept to 25 members. But mostly men responded, so these fledgling virtual reality entities were actively seeking women. In 1993 there were over 300 neighborhood salons and over 20,000 participants. Computer matching for virtual community was off and running.
