We Scholars: Changing The Culture Of The University
a book by David Damrosch
(our site's book review)
Among other things, Damrosch looks at the fact that modern academic life inhibits the broad consideration of general questions, due to its specialization, and the fact that so many disciplines are alienated from and hostile to the other disciplines. This is why the Tofflers and Einsteins exist not because of but in spite of their academic backgrounds. There needs to be more synthesis and more holistic, systems thinking, like these people did, and in general less Second Wave, mechanistic-reductionistic worldviews and more Third Wave, ecological-holistic worldviews. See Capra's The Web of Life: A New Scientific Understanding of Living Systems.
