The Future Face of Terrorism
a book by Marvin J. Cetron
(our site's book review)
“According to members of both the Futurist and Terrorist Advisory Boards, assembled by Forecasting International, an improvised nuclear, biological, or chemical attack on the United States is increasingly probable,” says Cetron.
The infamous mushroom cloud of a nuclear bomb explosion
The Tofflers and many other such experts say the same thing. The most dangerous and radical and merciless of tomorrow’s terrorists will not be motivated by political ideology, but instead by ethnic and religious hatreds. Even criminals will get in on the act, threatening the use of weapons of mass destruction to extort money, says Cetron. “. . . religious fanatics do not shrink from mass murder, because they are struggling against what they perceive as ‘the forces of darkness’ or are striving to preserve . . . ‘the purity of the race.’” The Hezbollah, the Basque ETA, and the Tamil Tigers rank among the world’s most professional and deadly terrorist groups. Counterfeiting can be used for economic terrorism. In the former Soviet Union, local and ethnic mafias have gotten a lock on the emerging private sector by allying with elements in the security service and party apparatus. Favorite future terrorism targets will be sports arenas, shopping malls, churches and theaters.
“Religious and ethnically motivated terrorists, who exhibit few constraints now, will have within their grasp the potential to create the Armageddon they seek.” We must prepare ourselves to defend against such actions, says Cetron.
Armageddon will be our reward is we continue warmongering insanity for no reason—all these neocons gambling with precious life just to make a buck: makes one wonder just how much our culture is worth saving, if it has, indeed, brought us to such a precarious juncture. Religious and ethnically motivated terrorists, who exhibit few constraints now, will soon have within their grasp the potential to create the Armageddon they seek.
A Bible-thumping fundamentalist preacher preaching Hell and damnation
Of course, this all screams out to us a singular question: what is there about religion that makes people so insanely hateful, violent, homicidal, or even genocidal? The answer is threefold:
- Both the Bible and the Koran are full of violent actions taken by both God and holy book characters and both tomes condone slavery as long as the slaves are unbelievers. "An eye for an eye" is a conflict-extending strategy. "Love thine enemy" is advice that is rarely taken seriously by either holy book characters or those that read said tomes. Examples in holy books that get emulated are rarely the peace-loving ones where there are negotiations and reasonable verbal conflict resolution. The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. In addition, the Old Testament is a 'book filled with...the violence of God'. (Buddhism has tons of violence as does Hinduism.)
- Because the preachers of these two religions have such violent books to preach from, some of these preachers take such things seriously and actual condone hate and even violence in subtle or disguised form. An example would be preaching what a terrible thing abortion is and implying that "such sinners should atone for their sins." The ignorant, mentally ill, and unstable among the congregations take this as an 007 license to kill.
- The biggest answer to "where is all the hate coming from" is easily found in the child-raising methods of most cultures on the planet. Said methods result in win-lose character structures primed for conflict, hate, war, and killing.
The Bible really does advise child abuse!
Prov 23:13: "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die."
Prov 23:14: "Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell (Shoel)."
After seeing this, many a good parent has started beating his/her kids, in spite of modern childraising books, simply because the Bible recommends it and the Bible is supposed to be the word of God and “God is infallible.” Please ask yourself whether or not all of human science is wrong and therefore we should discard all books and use the Bible as our sole childraising manual, abuse advice and all! (The Koran has similar advice.) Holy books are a reflection of the times in which they were written, and need to be read in that spirit. They couldn't help it they were so ignorant (compared to modern mankind) that they thought child abuse was a fine idea. But we CAN stop allowing such obscenities to affect our thoughts and actions!
This abortion clinic bomber has distorted the anti-abortion message of his fundamentalist preacher as a call to violent action
By not empowering relationships, parenting and communication with the existing wisdom on the subject, we help to create a world in which the proclivity for win-lose violent solutions involving war-forms is strong and preordained, and the proclivity for win-win solutions involving peace-forms is muted and unlikely to result in a peaceful world, since the basic character structures of the citizens have been misguidedly conditioned to reflect only win-lose mind-sets. See Flat-gradient Nurturance versus Steep-gradient Nurturance.
The basic character structures of U.S. citizens have been misguidedly conditioned to reflect only win-lose mind-sets
We needn’t feel that culturally imposed character structures are a deterministic given and that we must operate within the parameters of this given. Because, in the Third Wave 21st century, if we diligently apply a “knowledge must become capability” axiom to the task of nurturing win-win character structures rather than win-lose ones, we will have partially abolished the preconditions for war in that we have partially eliminated the conditioned tendency to solve conflicts with authoritarian, force-based solutions, opting instead to nurture into our offspring the tendency to cooperate, communicate, negotiate, learn, and apply wisdom in a win-win context. This, of course, is the type of character structure that empowers the Third Wave to be less of a reason for conflict and more of a reason to communicate and find win-win peace-forms that solve problems the more benign way. This type of character is, in short, the type of character that is appropriate for Third Wave civilization.
The MC movement sees itself as a peace-through-wisdom movement, believing that knowledge, judiciously employed in society not via social engineering but via individual lifestyle decisions of a society’s people, may prevent the outbreak of the development of the character-based proclivities for war and conflict, which will in turn prevent many conflicts. This gets to the root of the matter better than other ways, since people who have the proclivity for win-lose conflict resolution will eventually resort to war-forms since the win-win nature of many peace-forms will not suit them.
