Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth
a book by Ben Shapiro
(our site's book review)
The Amazon blurb says that Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth is the explosive exposé of the leftist agenda at work in today's colleges, revealed by firebrand Ben Shapiro, a recent UCLA gratudate, syndicated columnist, and one of today's most exciting new conservative voices, who's been on the front lines of the battle for America's young minds. This book proves once and for all that so-called higher education continues to sink lower and lower into the depths of liberal madness as close-minded professors turn their students into socialists, atheists, race-baiters, and sex-crazed narcissists.
"Ben Shapiro's writing is smart, informative, and incisive. He is wise beyond his years without losing the refreshing fearlessness of youth." —Ann Coulter, best-selling author of High Crimes and Misdeameanors, Slander, and Treason.
"In Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth, Shapiro tells the truth—that universities are forums of left-liberal indoctrination, where dissent is discouraged and penalized, with more restrictions on free speech than any other part of American society. Parents who are paying for tutition might want to take note, and see what their hard-earned money is paying for." —Michael Barone, U.S. News & World report and co-author of The Almanac of American Politics.

Colleges enforce mindless conformity including indoctrinating students involuntarily with a vile form of political correctness
"Welcome to P.C. 101. In this trenchant insider's expose, Ben Shapiro bears witness to the modern American campus freak show. You'll get up close and personal with the Marxist loons, moral relativists, multicultural zealots, and American-haters who are corrupting young minds. Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth reveals the ignominious lows to which higher education has sunk. Get deprogrammed. Buy this book!" —Michelle Malkin, nationally syndiated columnist and author of Invasion.

"Sharp thinking, tight writing, crazy-but-true stories: Ben Shapiro sees campus brainwashing and raises a national protest. This is a good book to give both freshmen who need warning and voters/alumni who need to take action." —Dr. Marvin Olasky, University of Texas professor and editor-in-chief of World magazine
"A worthy successor to God and Man at Yale and Harvard Hates America in exploring the belly of the academic beast." —David Horowitz, founder of Students for Academic Freedom and author of Radical Son and Left Illusions
"What Animal House did for the toga party, Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth should do for American resistance to campus radicalism." —Rusty Humphries, nationally syndicated radio talk show host

When parents send their children off to college, mom and dad hope they’ll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute–able to see issues from all points of view—but the exact opposite is happening
"When parents send their children off to college, mom and dad hope they’ll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute–able to see issues from all points of view. But, according to Ben Shapiro, there’s only one view allowed on most college campuses: a rabid brand of liberalism that must be swallowed hook, line, and sinker.
In this explosive book, Ben Shapiro, a college student himself, reveals how America’s university system is one of the largest brainwashing machines on the planet." (Source: Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America’s Youth, Conservative Book Club)

Ben Shapiro, a college student himself, reveals how America’s university system is one of the largest brainwashing machines on the planet
"Shapiro has written "Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth" (WND Books), alerting the world to what Shapiro sees as the sorry state of US higher education. Some early readers have already disparaged Shapiro's book — published by a conservative watchdog group — as an angry rant. But the young author is clearly not alone in his views, and some suggest that the stir he is creating is indeed a sign that something is amiss in US academe. . . . censorship of conservative views on college campuses is a growing problem that's hard to ignore. . . . Mr. Lukianoff says he hears regular reports of campus newspapers airing conservative viewpoints being destroyed before they can be read. Conservative speakers are sometimes silenced." (Source: Brainwashing on campus?, Marjorie Kehe, The Christian Science Monitor)

Conservative speakers are often silenced before they can speak, by threats, by assaults, by shout-downs—freedom of speech is dying and all Americans, blue or red, should be up in arms
"Another interesting observation is how out of kilter professorial opinions are with mainstream America on just about every issue. I also found it interesting that in most universities, faculty who identify themselves as Democrat outnumber their colleagues who identify themselves as Republican or 'other' as almost 9 to 1. He offered no real observations as to how the university system got into the left-leaning mess it’s in. It’s certainly evidence to the contrary that the most educated folks are the 'smartest.'" Professors say that if you’re conservative, you’re unqualified to clean highways, much less teach a classroom of students
"In an open discussion, conservatives usually win. Couple the fact that liberals lose in open argument with the fact that many liberals believe conservatism to be not just wrong, but evil, and you get your answer: in order to prevent evil (conservatism) from winning out over good (liberalism), we must exclude conservatism from the debate. . . . Professors say that if you’re conservative, you’re unqualified to clean highways, much less teach a classroom of students. . . . Making a case for one side and completely discarding the other side, that’s indoctrination. . . . If you don’t care enough to get the other side of the story for yourself, and you know that if you parrot the professor you’ll get an A, why bother exploring your political options? . . . the most egregious example of campus brainwashing that I found was the almost universal adoption of moral relativism in the classroom. . . . Students for Academic Freedom is doing a tremendous job on campus. I’ve never seen the conservative movement on campus as cohesive or powerful as it has become. Conservative students don’t feel like they’re alone anymore, and they feel like they have a real purpose, a real fight to fight, and the resources to fight it." John K. Wilson says Shapiro's book is wrong—conservatives wrongly see communists under every rock and they see a vast left-wing conspiracy controlling American higher education
"If Brainwashed is any indication, professors are bending over backwards to give fair grades to conservatives who, imitating their political talk show idols, have only a remote familiarity with accuracy. Brainwashed is a badly-written, badly-reasoned book that promotes a plainly false picture of higher education, but one that is increasingly popular among those who want to launch a crusade against the Marxists, communists, and militant homosexuals whom they imagine to be in charge of a vast left-wing conspiracy controlling American higher education." (Source: Brainwashed!: A Look Inside the Vast Left-Wing Campus Conspiracy, John K. Wilson, IL-AAUP)
America has an enormous challenge ahead to return our colleges and Universities to a platform of education without indoctrination, and we can expect liberals to fight us all the way. There is no freedom of speech if you disagree even slightly with the left-wing political thought being brainwashed into our young. Shapiro name names and names offending universities, but that gets a bit boring after awhile. High school kids will use the book profitably if it steers them away from indoctrination centers disguised as institutions of higher learning. Indoctrination is NOT a synonym for education. Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth is loaded with information students need to know before they enter an institution that will control and limit their ability to think critically and independently.

Cults suck (money from your wallet); colleges suck out students' ability to think for themselves
Political correctness is not taught as a leftwing idea, theory, or opinion. It is taught as THE ONE AND ONLY TRUTH AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS AN EVIL, DIRTY LIE. This is the type of inflexible attitude you'd expect to find in cults like Scientology or Moonies. It's a dirty shame when universities act like this. The curriculums of all modern colleges have been denuded of traditional courses to be replaced by Queer Theory, Feminist studies, and Marxism. Say, what are we preparing our kids for—to be in freak shows? Leftist views are in fact mainstream while conservative views simply have no place anywhere on campus. This is tragic, shortsighted, foolish, and ugly.

Marxism was and is an interesting idea, but it turns out to be easier to twist into an oppressive authoritarian control system than even capitalism is; this was never Marx's intention
We take exception to Shapiro's criticism of Noam Chomsky. He is the world's most respected intellectual for a reason. He challenges capitalism and corporate greed in exactly the way they need to be challenged. He wrote the best book of the 21st century: Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power. Our system is set up to allow the rich and powerful to exploit the nonrich mercilessly. Chomsky simply wants a fair deal for everyone, which echoes the words of our Founders.

As Chomsky tells us, the ladder of class mobility is rigged so the nonrich cannot climb up to become rich
As Amazon reviewer J Connolly says, "The only diversity that should be of any concern at an institution of higher learning is intellectual diversity. 'Cultural diversity' invariably corresponds to a rise in political uniformity crucial to promote an extreme ideological agenda. Academics don’t really want things diverse so that unacceptable factual perspectives are permitted a hearing on campus or the public square. Brainwashing students to embrace the anti-intellectual, anti-religion, anti-American 'party line' uncritically is the primary, overriding goal of higher education today. There is no longer such a thing as a true 'liberal arts' education to prepare youth to think and act based on the time-tested truths elucidated by Western Civilization."

Shapiro: Science Classes Ought to Teach Divine Creation Instead of Evolution
On the other hand, another reviewer comments that Shapiro argues that science classes ought to teach divine creation instead of evolution, and he demands teaching of moral absolutes instead of telling the students that they have to find their own. The book is raging hypocrisy. He claims to expose indoctrination and brainwashing while criticizing universities for failing to indoctrinate and brainwash with his agenda. This is a fair comment, and Shapiro really does need to not press fundamentalist values on us in his books and radio commentary. Us NONfundamentalists do not appreciate unwanted religious dogma laid on us in any way and for any reason. Like most wise Americans, we believe in the separation of church and state. Shapiro was very young (20) when he wrote this book, so he can be forgiven for this lapse in judgment.

Liberal colleges have become echo chambers for liberal points of view and conservative views are not tolerated and conservative speakers are not invited
University professors these days are wanting to prosecute anything and everything challenging their dogma as a "hate crime" or where any criticism or differing point of view becomes something worthy of sending a student to a "student tribunal" for a brainwashing session. What a pathetic state of affairs! Our universities are being wrecked by the PC disease, and its symptoms are leftist radicalization, "safe spaces", "micro-aggressions", and "cultural-appropriation" run amok like a Frankenstein monster. Liberal colleges have become echo chambers for liberal points of view and conservative views are not tolerated and conservative speakers are not invited. Schools having a diversity of ideas prompting discussions have gone extinct. Now we have a diversity of race but a singular message: the liberal narrative.

Shapiro gives lots of examples of how he stood up to and questioned professors and challenged other students and in the final chapter urges other young people to "think for themselves" and explore all the facts before caving in to the opinions of their instructors. There is a political correctness dictatorship on campuses. At today's universities, debate is prohibited or at least tightly controlled. Students have seen debate points scripted by the professor and vetted by the administration. Students have also seen people "assigned: debating points based on "what we expect you to think." One wonders if students' dorm rooms are bugged so as to catch nonconformists being politically incorrect or thinking for themselves or supporting conservative arguments, in which case they are sent to re-education centers, a la USSR re-education centers (Gulags) using "re-education via forced labor" techniques, only in the U.S. the forced labor is replaced by brainwashing. The gulag was a major instrument of political repression in the Soviet Union. The U.S. university system is already seen by conservatives as a major instrument of political repression in the U.S. A few universities and private schools stand out as exceptions, thankfully.

At today's universities, debate is prohibited or at least tightly controlled—our young are being told what to think by leftist liberal radicals that have no answer to conservative arguments so they simply gag conservatives, a dangerous and cowardly move
As one Amazon reviewer says, At Ferris State University I've seen pure socialism taught by a professor. She actually advocated that all children, when they reach the age of 5 years old, be taken from their parents and put into state schools for proper education. When I argued against this the end result was this poster was asked to leave the Teachers College of Ferris State University. So if you believe the conservatives are exaggerating the teaching of Marxism and the worst aspects of socialism, think about the above, in a State University in a free state in a free country. "Ferris State University's Core Values: Diversity: By providing a campus which is supportive, safe, and welcoming, Ferris embraces a diversity of ideas, beliefs, and cultures." OR DOES IT? There should be signs posted on all state funded universities: "Abandon Hope all ye who enter here."

As students leave liberal academia to make their way in the real world, they exhibit all the signs of being brainwashed: talk like a robot, walk like a robot, think like a robot, eat like a robot, converse like a robot—and yet they PAID $ FOR THE EXPERIENCE!

And then they start hearing their own propaganda and realize something terrible: they had not only been spoon-fed crap—they'd been force-fed crap, and prevented from thinking for themselves!
