What Is An MC? MC stands for microcommunity. It refers to an intentional subcommunity whose setting is a normally-structured block-house neighborhood (or partial neighborhood; e.g., six homes) or apartment neighborhood (e.g., one floor or one partial floor) that contains from 10 to 40 people who’ve intentionally computer-selected their members for great compatibility and relocated to this MC (a few may already have lived at this location, but the odds against many of them already living there are great, due to compatibility probabilities), and who’ve adopted certain proven modes of considering each other (who are or will become best friends) as social resources for child care, eldercare, and other nonsuperficial levels of communication that, when appropriate, is facilitated by P.E.T. (Parent Effectiveness Training), or one of the other authoritative parenting styles, and by PSB™s. (See below.) How do these people find each other? Through MC Matching methods. What are the other authoritative parenting styles? See the bottom of this page Why Register for MC Matching? for a list of the best ones there are and the books about them.
How Are MCs Different From Other Lifestyles? MCs are not random aggregations of people—like your current neighborhood, which is populated by people you barely know, people you don't know, and people you don't want to know, all of which is a pretty poor substitute for community. MC people have intentionally selected one another and become best friends and therefore trust fellow members with child care and eldercare—and in other ways. So they’re not stuck with putting kids into day care centers with strangers who don’t care about their kids—their MC contains only people who care about them and their kids. Care is given by MC members, not strangers. And care is flat-gradient nurturance (more caregiver choices) rather than steep-gradient nurturance, which is forcing kids to have one or two caretakers when they prefer a situation of several choices since sometimes parents don't feel like being around their kids and when they do it anyway, low quality care results. With steep-gradient nurturance, parents choose who will care for kids, and when, regardless of the kids' wants and needs, but in MCs the flat-gradient nurturance allows kids to choose their caregivers.
This is in keeping with the tenets of Attachment Parenting in which kids needs are filled when the kids manifest them and how kids want them filled, where possible, and this applies to caregiver choice as much as when to nurse them, feed them, comfort them, etc. If kids usually choose to be cared for by parents, that's fine, but the critical issue here is the kids need to be able to CHOOSE.
Reiterating: kids choose whom to be with, to the largest degree possible. And abuse becomes nearly impossible, since there are other nurturers in whom the kids confide, and because kids would not choose to be with an abuser. And the communication and parenting style in an MC is P.E.T. (Parent Effectiveness Training) or one of the other authoritative parenting styles. However, not just parents but all relationships in the MC use this style, as it is the most effective for nurturing, conflict resolution, sensitivity to feelings, etc. For extra empowerment of sensitivity to feelings, see Supercharging MC Empowerment.
MC families live in normal houses and apartments as normal nuclear, single parent, extended, and mixed types of families. MCs are free to choose, if they prefer, only certain types of people, certain races, certain religions, all two-parent nuclear families, all singles, or whatever—people that choose each other really like each other and respect each other’s values and interests. The wrong way to maximize social resources is via communes, socialism, communism, fascism, gurus, cults, etc. They give the very idea of maximal resources a bad name. The right way to maximize social resources is to empower democracy and responsible independence and leave people’s physical living modes and family styles alone. Instead, concentrate on making the relationships work optimally between spouses, parents and children, friends, committed neighbors, and committed relatives, so that they produce happiness, optimal childcare, fulfillment, and self-actualization, not symptoms and dysfunctional lifestyles.
Microcommunities (MCs) are intentional tiny communities in neighborhoods about the size of a suburban block with aesthetic landscaping enhancements, cottage industries, and fitting the “tribe” trend of the Third Wave world, with less reliance on government and more on local initiative even in areas like health care, child care, education, crime prevention, and job training. Microcommunities will be a sturdy foundation upon which to build a planetary-scale civilization. It’s important that the politicians, Utopians and social engineers stay out of it and let individual and family initiative do its work. The world needs MC opportunities that people can choose to act upon to make life work. It does NOT need MCs generated from social and political policies.
MCs are not for the dependent, the thoughtless, the uncompassionate, the ignorant, the lazy, the apathetic, the at-effect or the losers. They’re for thoughtful, knowledgeable, compassionate, energetic, wise, independent, at-cause winners who want the world to work and seek to be part of that process by getting their own lives together first and then working their way up from there. But they’re not for elitists. Part of the definition of an MC is that once it gets its act together, its members help other friends and non-MC people improve their lives and relationships, and for those that are the most evolved, they help MC evolution on the big scale. MCs cannot make winners out of losers, but can set up lifestyles so that the parenting and social resources are such that winners evolve, and when less-aware people see what MCs produce, they will want their own MCs. Even though deterministic parenting (mostly authoritarian and permissive as opposed to authoritative like in MCs) and social-resource-poor environments will continue to produce symptoms-oozing children who become symptoms-oozing adults, over time the hope is that there will be less of this and more MC evolution, resulting in a compassionate world full of aware, loving people.
Toffler has pointed out many of the civilizational waves and social movements in our past and present and has shown us the meaning of the Third Wave (information is power), especially for our future. The MCs are a way for both prosumption (his term) and the renewal of cottage industry trends in his Third Wave predictions to take form in a way where information-rich parenting and social structure counter the current socially negative forces mostly stemming from greed, ignorance, incompetent parenting, inadequate social structures, and Second Wave (force and violence and authoritarianism are power) values and habits, as well as the clash of Second and Third (and even First) Wave values and social structures.
What remained when most social tasks were exteriorized in the 1950s was the isolated ‘nuclear family,’ held together less by the functions its members performed as a unit than by fragile psychological bonds that are all too easily snapped
Toffler examines changes in family situations over the years, noting that nuclear families were the new experiment societies all over the world conducted as they entered the most intense part of the Second Wave and experienced true mobility. Note: It should be mentioned here that no one had any reason to believe that this new experiment would succeed; they tried this form for its mobility and convenience, certainly not for its demonstrated social or psychological viability. However, there’s no reason that such a form cannot work if it is well empowered to create positive social evolution and happiness. There’s also no reason that such a form will work well if it is not sufficiently supported, empowered, and networked so that it expresses the viability of a social system rather than the disconnected alienation and dysfunctionality of the elements in that system.
John Wayne heroic individualism, even in obviously inappropriate areas such as childcare, has tainted the nuclear family experiment seriously
Unfortunately, John Wayne heroic individualism, even in obviously inappropriate areas such as childcare, has tainted the nuclear family experiment seriously. Isolated nuclear families, with the help of media propaganda and simple ignorance, began to believe that extrafamilial human contact was a sign of weakness. This was combined with the phenomenon of women who somehow couldn’t be brainwashed into staying in a box their whole lives knitting, baking and smiling. It all added up to social ills piling up like moldy cordwood. Isolated nuclear families were a hopeless idea from day one, an idea that embarrassingly showed how little mankind had managed to learn from history. On the other hand, well-connected nuclear families have been, are being, and will be among the best bets for family structure that anyone has come up with.
A baseball bat does wonders with propelling a baseball. But a pile of sawdust with exactly the same amount of wood as the bat would be a dismal failure at such a task. It all depends on how the wood particles are connected. It depends not just on viable substance (analogous to families) but also on viable structure (analogous to MCs). Toffler predicts that in the world of the Third Wave, well-connected and well-networked nuclear families often with expanded or extended configurations and cottage industry roles will play a big part in society.
We second the motion.
Bat succeeds but sawdust pile (identical amount of wood) fails at ball hitting; structure is as critical as substance in both baseball and lifestyle
Adoption of MC lifestyles requires no political processes, taxes, social “programs,” well-meaning Big (or Medium or Small) Government social engineering, etc. The people themselves take full responsibility for these lifestyle transformations, with no interference from any institution whatever. It’s not Left or Right or even Center, but a transcendent synthesis of all the best wisdom from all sides. It requires merely a willingness to do what works as opposed to what doesn’t work—it’s as simple as that.
The Left tends to say "it takes a village" (partially correct, but implying lots of social programs to pay for). The Right tends to say "no, it takes a family, not a village" (partially correct, and implying dislike of paying for social programs for things that families ought to be dealing with). MC members tend to say "we have all the advantages of both the Left's compassionate village and the Right's family-centered values and none of the disadvantages of either of these worldviews!" See what an MC would be like.
We live in dangerous times. Iraq played hide and seek with the U.N. inspector teams regarding their weapon of mass destruction programs and later Iran did the same. And now, in June 2014, the whole Iraq War effort is exposed as a fiasco even worse than Vietnam, as Iraq starts its rapid fall to insurgents. Criminals took over in Russia, and the powers-that-be, including organized crime, seem to be thwarting efforts for reform so that the people will eventually see that “capitalism will never work here—we may as well go back to the old ways.” Russia has become a kleptocracy—they have become a political system ranked as one of the world’s most corrupt.
Terrorists are dying to use WMDs to express their misguided hate, religious bigotry, and psychopathic natures
Terrorists seem to be out to get American interests, and after the 1998 embassy bombings in Africa, Clinton bombed a terrorist camp and a drug factory making chemical warfare chemicals. And of course, the terrorists’ response was what it always is—to swear revenge. The 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the 2001 9-11 World Trade Center terrorist attack demonstrate that it can and does happen here. And planes are vulnerable to terrorists finally creating surgically implanted bombs in humans that fool the sensors in addition to other un-thought-of ways to cause them to ram into buildings. Our electrical grid is entirely vulnerable to EMP devices exploded in the atmosphere. Our water systems are vulnerable to tampering. Our bridges, dams, railroads and subways are vulnerable to sabotage. Our most critical computers are vulnerable to hacking—even national defense computers have been hacked. The Internet is vulnerable. We are vulnerable to both biological and chemical attacks as well as dirty bombs.
9/11 terrorist attack
The truth is, it's a thousand times easier to destroy and murder than it is to protect and defend. The truth is, much of the world seems to believe that, rather than continuing on our current course of being "war-loving and aggressive," we are more likely to effectively prevent terrorism by changing our national policies from (apparently—to the rest of the world) belligerent to peace-loving and non-aggressive. The truth is, we are more likely to effectively prevent terrorism by changing our people from greedy, selfish, immoral, aggressive and self-centered to generous, moral, non-aggressive, and compassionate. The world can understand a little payback in Afghanistan after 9/11, but attacking Iraq was seen as Bush's foolishness as well as proof of America's imperialistic ambitions and willingness to invade whoever we want just to protect oil flow. The Neoconserative Threat to World Order: America's Perilous War for Hegemony and Good News and Bad News.
The U.S. military bullies dropping a little 'democracy' on Middle Eastern citizens
"After 9/11, President Bush declared regime change to be official U.S. policy. He took this country to war to create regime change in Iraq. How does the president know which governments to overthrow? According to Bush’s criteria, a government must:
- build or sell weapons of mass destruction
- violate U.N. resolutions
- threaten, invade, or dominate its neighbors
- exploit many of its own poorest citizens
- erode the civil liberties or human rights of its people
- fail to live up to democratic ideals
Neocon nutjobs tell us that dumping our Bill of Rights and our Constitution was a prerequisite for our safety, which no intelligent citizen could possibly buy
We need to be developing alternative energy sources rather than be seen as warmongers protecting oil flow
We need to be developing alternative energy sources rather than be seen as warmongers protecting oil flow, which in turn was the last straw for all the covert terrorism ideas in the world which soon shifted from covert feelings to overt actions. Radical Islam already hated the U.S. because of our Israel connection, but hate boiled into terrorism once us infidels invaded an Islamic state unprovoked. Metaphorically, if developing alternative energy sources costs $10 but paying for the anti-terrorism policies of ramped up defenses and our War on Terror (13 years and counting with no end in sight, in 2014) costs $10,000, are we really getting that much of a bargain?! "Why we didn't impeach Bush rather than allowing him to ring a bell that can never be unrung?" is the question. We guess our nation was so mad we couldn't think straight. It's excusable to FEEL that way, but to provoke an eternal War on Terror that puts us in huge debt, wrecking future generations lives in the process?! It is time we start being a hell of a lot more cautious about who we stick into the White House.national debt
Unless American citizens start defecating money, the debt has put us all in deep doo-doo
Dubya Bush the Liar lied us into the illegal Iraq invasion
And Obama is even worse than Bush, which many thought impossible. For more on this distasteful subject, see Health Care Costs.
Obama is the worst liar, the biggest sellout, the most obvious Corporatocracy lackey, the sneakiest and most disappointing President our country has ever had the misfortune to experience
We have few reasons to believe that the world will get safer in the near future as a result of national or international politics, diplomacy, or peace initiatives. The world is changing. Change requires instability. And instability is always dangerous—it's a fact of life. Never has there been more need for the MC movement and all that it entails. The increased stability and compassion, the logarithmically accelerating peace context, the enhanced lifestyles and relationships and communication—all this would set the stage for partial disarmament to the level of MSD (minimum sufficiency deterrence), for international cooperation about environmental issues, for increased United Nations effectiveness, for full nuclear weapon test bans, and for workable nonproliferation treaties and actions. There would also be a worldwide conversion of weapons technology into energy and environmental technology. The "peace dividend"—long overdue—would finally be realized as the world beat spears into plowshares.
These things wouldn't happen because people happened to be in benevolent moods after Sunday services, or because someone wrote a pleading letter to the military industrial complex, or because people wrote their congressmen. They would happen because people's basic character supported such a change—a change that would be empowered by what can be called "the MC dividend," in which character, ethics, and responsibility are given enhanced opportunity to evolve and grow in MC environments.
If would-be terrorists saw such a change in America's character and saw us elect a leader of such character (rather than another flunkey taking orders from corporations and the military industrial complex), this would eventually lead them to decide to go from overt action to simply covert hatred. Trying to scare and threaten them with our expressions of negative power (force) only makes them want to develop WMDs to kill the Evil Satans, whereas trying to understand their feelings better and deal with them by ceasing the sabre-rattling and beginning a new peace initiative based upon an actual positive transformation of national character, national intent, national policy—this could work. Especially if coupled with serious environmentally friendly policies and a crash program to develop and use alternative energy sources.
The MC dividend could work wonders on character, because of the natural humanizing effect of such a compassionate, need-filling environment. On the other hand, when people's basic character is formed, like it is now, in situations where envy, mistrust, authoritarianism, anger, threats, coercion and inadequate need-fulfillment prevail, then negative-power (win-lose) upbringing produces negative-power character structure which in turn leads to negative-power upbringing for the next generation, ad infinitum. Such people are predestined to express themselves politically and parentally by either voting for or becoming negative-power candidates and by becoming negative-power parents. Manipulation and coercion are then the win-lose tools of choice during the leader's reign, whether in the state or the home. This explains the Bushes and Obama and the mess we are in from their bungling and their sellouts. Do not misread this. The Bushes seem like decent, normal people, however wealthy. But like most of us, they bring up kids with authoritarianism, anger, threats, coercion and inadequate need-fulfillment (re: nurturing, not things), and look at the end result. They say that insanity is making the same errors over and over again, but constantly expecting a different result. What do you think, dear reader, isn't it time to leave the insanity behind?
They say that insanity is making the same errors over and over again, but constantly expecting a different result, but isn't it time to leave the insanity behind?
If children’s basic character is formed in a win-win situation where manipulation has been replaced by cooperation and P.E.T.-type communication, and coercion has been replaced by compassion and empathy—as well as fair, ethical, democratic actions and win-win conflict resolution, then when they grow up to be responsible adults, they will, as elected officials or parents, perform their duties in a win-win context of compassion, democracy, fairness, and life-enhancement. This type of person is certain to pass such benevolent qualities on to his offspring, and to positively influence his party, coworkers or anyone else around him. Furthermore, this type of person is vital to the task of creating a truly safe world where peace is a genuine expression of the hearts and character of the world's people.
Too many people, for far too long, have naïvely offered us rhetoric-oozing ideology in which peace will come from voting for this or that party, signing this or that treaty, enforcing this or that trade agreement, or even oppressing or obliterating this or that faction or ethnic group. Wiser people have never been easily persuaded that peace did indeed lie along such paths. Something, they knew intuitively, was missing from the recipe. Too bad these wiser people are not the type we elect!
It is time that we all overtly face the scary truth which we have known all along, underneath: There will be no true and lasting peace until the people involved are at peace with themselves, FEEL peaceful, and create peace within others. How long until the Irans or North Koreas of the world start using WMDs on Evil Satan Americans? According to the online buzz, not long at all. The best way to be situationally proactive here is not to bomb them quick before they bomb us, like many are suggesting but instead to let them see a benevolent revamping of our actual character as people, and to elect such a person who spearheads a new type of peace movement not based on lies, manipulations, and phoniness, but on genuine American compassion, understanding, and wisdom. The Mideast states will see through the lies, manipulations, and phoniness. They always have, since that business with the Shah of Iran, which was not this country's finest hour!
Few people on our planet can meet such stringent qualifications as will be required of such a leader, simply because few lifestyles produce such people. Those who have studied the lifestyles that are closest to producing people with the qualities cited have seen that it is indeed lifestyles resembling MC lifestyles (with their flat-gradient nurturing and win-win parenting) that do the job. The prerequisite for a peaceful world, one with countries that are at peace with themselves and which relate from a peaceful, win-win context to peaceful neighbors, is the international success of the MC movement. Cultural transformation CAN happen when people see they have everything to gain and nothing to lose, and when it is clearly the only sure way to preclude eventual Armageddon.
Armageddon will be our reward is we continue warmongering insanity for no reason—all these neocons gambling with precious life just to make a buck: makes one wonder just how much our culture is worth saving, if it has, indeed, brought us to such a precarious juncture
We need a Defense Department that concentrates on protecting us from solar flare EMPs by hardening the infrastructure and protects us from incoming meteors by any means necessary, rather than stockpiling weapons and distrusting all other countries. This can only occur if the MC dividend is realized internationally and the world trades war for peace, aggression for compassion, and win-lose character structures for win-win character structures.
We need a Defense Department that concentrates on protecting us from solar flare EMPs by hardening the infrastructure and protects us from incoming meteors by any means necessary, rather than stockpiling weapons
We need leadership. Not the Bushes, Obama, etc. People of vision, not political rhetoric. We need people who can help our nation, first, and later the entire world, move from the danger of old-paradigm thinking with its win-lose, reductionistic, mechanistic world view to new-paradigm thinking with its win-win, ecological, holistic world view. We need heros and sages. There used to be John Wayne movies with simple black-and-white people and actions which could all be dichotomized into either good or evil. But since the absolutes of World War II we've seen Vietnam, Watergate, Irangate, the S&L scam, Whitewatergate, Monicagate, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, etc., and the line between good and evil has blurred. Recent leaders are merely flunkies for the military industrial complex, keeping war going so they can profit. The result? ISIS. And conflict and hate and terrorism everywhere.
The U.S. has a genuine terrorist creation factory going, and the end result of our bull-in-a-china-shop tactics was the Islamics evolving a few bull-in-a-china-shop tactics of their own: ISIS
Using drones and other weapons, the U.S. murders several innocents for every terror suspect they kill
People have ceased to believe that leaders are either heroic or wise. Leaders merely need to be rich, devious, and have more effective P.R. campaigns than others—indeed, this is precisely how they graduate from being mere mud-slinging candidates to being elected leaders. Intrinsically superior qualities like high ethical standards, integrity, honesty and compassion would, in this day and age, be tremendous liabilities in a political campaign, because it might make the person fight fair while the other candidates were fighting dirty—which would probably cost this candidate the election. (Think of the 2016 presidential election fiasco. What's dirtier than planted fake news?) Issues have been replaced by sound bites, images, and catch-phrases as well as exploitation of hot-button Culture War issues. There's no longer any place for heros—leaders we deeply respect for their wisdom, compassion, and fairness.
High ethical standards, integrity, honesty and compassion would, in this day and age, be tremendous liabilities in a political campaign, because it might make the person fight fair while the other candidates were fighting dirty
Or isn't there?
"Carl Sagan deserves enormous credit for raising the nuclear winter question and forcing us to think about it. He is as much a hero of our time as Pauling was the hero of the fifties." These are the words of Freeman Dyson of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. He was talking about Carl Sagan in reference to his book A Path Where No Man Thought.
Thomas Gordon was similarly considered a hero for refining the chaos of normal family relationships into a truly effective set of relationship S.O.P.s. To confirm this it is only necessary to talk to any of the people in the millions of families (all over the world) he has helped to transform through his Parent Effectiveness Training into happy, functional, win-win members of new-paradigm families.
Some are beginning to realize that Jack Kevorkian was a hero for fighting for all of us for the right to choose the way and time that we end our lives. And Compassion & Choices and Final Exit Network are heroes too—what could be more important than being able to choose how you live and die? And let us not forget that whistleblower Edward Snowden sacrificed so very much to tell us we were all being spied on by NSA goons. That is true, self-sacrificing heroism.
Contrast, if you will, the type of leadership and ethics offered by the framers of our Constitution with the type offered by today's American politicians. (See Who Will Tell The People?: The Betrayal Of American Democracy and American Future (What Would George And Tom Do Now?).) Or contrast the latter with Vaclav Havel in Czechoslovakia and Arpad Goncz in Hungary, the first a playwright, the second a translator—both were drafted into politics by countries desperate for wisdom and integrity in government. Havel has stated that he and others in similar situations are trying to inject ideas of spirituality, mutual understanding, and mutual tolerance into affairs of state. Not only did Havel help expose the hollowness and emptiness of Marxism, he also kept alive the notion of a participatory public, and people who are accountable for their own destinies (starting an MC is a perfect example). Havel and Goncz, like the framers of our Constitution, are men of ideas, of lively discussion and debate, of courage. We can thank such heros for the democracies we enjoy today, although it is fast eroding. Bill Moyers stated all this eloquently in his book A World of Ideas II. See The Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of a Shadow Government and Democracy—an American Delusion.
Contrast the type of leadership and ethics offered by the framers of our Constitution with the type offered by today's American politicians (a.k.a. Corporatocracy flunkies)
Citizenship is more than voting; it's also taking part in the dialogue of democracy. (See The Responsive Communitarian Platform.) No longer is the soul of the poet, philosopher, historian or artist present in the political process. We the public are left to chew on the old bones of leftover P.R. events and tired slogans while the "experts" (read that "those rich and connected enough to play the game") indulge in political feasts. When members of the powers that be choose among various possible actions to take, they do it more for the good of the powers that be than for the public.
Public dialogue in the United States is mostly a fiction—a media event. Rather than inspiring high-level thinking, campaigns are calculated to elicit gut-level reactions. Buzzwords, images, and character assassinations are sleight-of-hand calculated to conceal from our awareness the fact that neither party is risking any real issue confrontations.
Bill Moyers stands almost alone as one who's proven that TV can support, rather than merely replace or undermine, meaningful dialogue. As he has talked to exceptionally wise and thoughtful people (below), a common theme has emerged about how our country is getting off the track and losing its way, drowning in isolation, alienation, superficiality, consumption-obsession, disconnectedness, apathy, and fear.
Moyers uncovered a common theme in the U.S. about how our country is getting off the track and losing its way, drowning in isolation, alienation, superficiality, consumption-obsession, disconnectedness, apathy, and fear
Cornel West, the cultural critic, says that the market ethos ". . . makes it very difficult to hold onto nonmarket values such as commitment in relationships, solidarity, community, care, sacrifice, risk and struggle . . . Profits become more important than human life. What we see is a very coldhearted mean-spiritedness . . . It's quite frightening."
Peter Sellers, the theatrical director, asks us all: "Are we good enough? Are we thinking big enough? Are we ambitious enough? Are we generous enough of spirit? What does our society look like next to the greatest things a human being ever uttered?"
Ernesto J. Cortes, Jr., the community organizer, says that people who come to him to learn to be public organizers ". . . care deeply about cities. They care about the city as a place where people come together and enter into relationships, where people's families are raised, and children are mentored, and old people are cared for. They see that cities all over the country are having very great difficulties. . . . They're deeply concerned about the need for meaningful and nurturing relationships, which are so hard to maintain in the isolation and alienation of our cities today."
Steven Rockefeller, professor of religion, points out that ". . . the greatest single moral failing of many religious traditions is their inability to teach their followers to respect people of a different tradition the same way they respect people of their own tradition." He also sees discrimination against women as a major flaw in orthodox traditions.
Rockefeller also underlines the risks of freedom in a discussion of Dostoyevsky's Grand Inquisitor in The Brothers Karamazov. He points out a parallel with Eastern Europe's democracy movement and with all of modern history. (And the current Mideast freedom movements highlight the point.) Can people handle the danger, risk and insecurity of freedom or would they prefer the safety, security and stability of being controlled by the state? It's a choice, in Frommian terms, between the stagnation and regressiveness—but pseudo-security—induced by following the authoritarian conscience and the risky growth and scary progress induced by following the humanistic conscience. Or, in Maslow's terms, the choice is between growth and safety.
Lester Brown, the environmentalist, points out the contradiction between the exploitation-prone economic system we now have and the trends of environmental degradation it is leading to. The economic system is sewing the seeds of its own destruction. "And as that inherent contradiction . . . becomes more apparent, I think we may see social changes and economic changes on a scale that we've not seen during our lifetimes."
The liberal 'zoo,' where the public is 'taken care of,' and the conservative 'jungle,' in which there is 'survival of the fittest' (read that richest and greediest), are both anachronisms
In seeking the type of leadership our country needs, to get out of the problems it is in, we're going to have to transcend the liberal-conservative continuum completely. We can't get anything done if we're tripping over stagnant labels and obsolete ideas. The liberal "zoo," where the public is “taken care of,” and the conservative "jungle," in which there is “survival of the fittest” (read that richest and greediest), are both anachronisms. John Chancellor, senior commentator for NBC News, told us (in his book Peril and Promise: A Commentary on America) that "It is time to end this half century of debate about the zoo and the jungle. The liberal zoo made sense when the country was on its knees during the Great Depression. The conservative jungle argument had its most forceful presentation during the Reagan years. Neither has much potency in today's world. Neither the liberals nor the conservatives have an appealing message these days. . . . The gap between the rich and the poor is now the widest in forty years. . . The energy is gone from conservative Republicanism. Without the cause of anticommunism, Republicans have become a party searching for a theme. Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, have run out of great national objectives . . . The old days are over. There is a compelling need for a new vocabulary of American politics, more pragmatic and less partisan, free of the ideological divisions of the past. We must put aside liberalism and conservatism in favor of cooperation and action." He goes on to say that:
"It's been a long time since the American people have been presented with an inspiring national challenge, something into which they could sink their very capable teeth. There is, however, every reason to believe they would respond, if someone would tell them in plain language what needs to be done, and guarantee that the effort would be shared equally." (See Why Register for an MC?.)
Chancellor then says that above all we must "learn to dream again. . . Where is our dream? Where is America's vision of the future? Americans have always been the world's greatest dreamers. We dreamed of independence, and got it . . . . Now we must dream again. . . We must move beyond the comfortable distractions of the recent past and the soft illusions of the present into the hard realities of the next century [and now that we are in it, we see that "hard" is truly the correct description]. And we can do it because we have done it before. There is great peril facing the United States, but the promise of the future is even greater. All we have to do is act on what we know."
The bottom line is this: There is a way we can humanize media output and political discourse, transcend the liberal-conservative continuum, make the world safer, raise our young so that peace, harmony, compassion and integrity are intrinsic character traits, respect and protect our world and the creatures in it in keeping with a full understanding of ecology (in the broadest sense of the word), learn to dream again, and respond to the great national challenge which is before us. Chancellor is right. If people are told in plain language what needs to be done to turn around the degeneration, cynicism, alienation, dysfunctionality and unhappiness, and if this can be kept out of the hands of win-lose politicians who will try to do with it what they do with everything else (make it a divisive, polarizing issue with which they can find a way to wring political points), and if this can be actualized at the grassroots level by individuals who can once again express the wonderful American spirit that has responded to so many great challenges in the past, then we can realize the promise of the future and once again act as a guiding light to lead the rest of the world toward peace, progress, cultural evolution and even world transformation.
But we simply cannot expect to become a peaceful, happy country full of human success stories—people who also happen to create peace and harmony in all their relationships and attitudes—if we're consistently raising our young to be greedy, insecure, irresponsible, win-lose-obsessed, old-paradigm subscribers. We're raising warriors, and it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. We need to raise peacemakers if we are to survive longterm. The MC plan is the one and only plan ever put forth that can reverse this warrior-raising trend. No religion, no beliefs, no cult, no political party or philosophy, no government program, and no social engineering could possibly do it! No one can do it for us—we must do it for ourselves. There is no quick fix.
We're raising warriors, and it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. We need to raise peacemakers if we are to survive longterm.
Chancellor is right—we must act on what we know! The MC movement is designed to become the unifying force that gets people talking and acting constructively, first, with regards to their own lives and those of their families and friends, then with regards to their communities, then with regards to their nation, and finally with regards to their world. It can and will release the energy, love, and intentionality needed for the transformation—forces that are present at this very moment but which lie dormant waiting for guidance, direction and certainty. It can and will create the CONTEXT in which appropriate character traits form in our offspring, and therefore win-win people end up expressing their true character by championing the MC movement, leading to the world transformation so obviously needed.
The critical element in the strategy here is to avoid all social engineering, since it has been shown in the twentieth century that nothing is more fertile soil for the growth of evil than massive programs that the higher-ups lay on the lower-downs “for their own good.” We’ve all seen whose “good” it’s really for, and all thinking people have decided to do their part to help their country and the world avoid this mistake in the future. That’s why the plan does not allow any agency, bureaucracy, government, or administration to get its greasy mitts on it.
We have to quit looking to social engineering superheroes and rely on local community efforts
Instead, it validates one and only one way of actualizing: Various individuals (some are extra brave, some are extra wise, but all are insightful enough to acknowledge that some aspects of their lives are a long way from what they could be) want to revamp the parts of their lives that are weak, deficient or malfunctioning; they encounter the MC opportunity; they check it out; they like it; they experiment with it (long-distance MCs, PSBs [see picture below], P.E.T communications, win-win relationships, flat-gradient nurturance, etc.), the results inspire them; they make the commitment to a greatly enhanced lifestyle and form MCs. Their character—and their offspring’s character once they grow up—is soon such that many of them help others whose lives are partially malfunctioning (and who ASK for the help) to learn MC ways. Others see people whose lives are greatly enhanced and they want in on it and the entire thing chain-reacts and soon a country is happier and more together than it has ever been before, and well on the way to leading the world towards oneness and peace.
Cynics may try as they might to detect how the movement could get corrupted, greedy, or wrong-headed. They will try in vain. Because of the fact that the MC movement is so win-win, there is no “power structure.” Absolutely no one has any more power than anyone else. No one has any power over anyone whatsoever. No one exploits anyone or wins in proportion to another’s losses. This is all positive power, in the Philip Slater sense. It’s the power of caring and loving and being responsible for self and others. And this is all highest-level power in the Toffler sense, the power of knowledge and wisdom transcending the need for the lower two levels of power: force and money.
Cynics may try as they might to point out that the MC movement and the producing of peacemakers instead of warriors is too dangerous. "We need warriors. It we turn into peaceniks, our country will be overrun by terrorists. We'll look weak and vulnerable. Our enemies will strike."
Good point. Wrong, but good. We all want to be safe—MCers at least as much as anyone. But the point is wrong because its assumptions are naive. Making peace isn't about surrendering or failing to protect ourselves. If everyone was an MCer tomorrow, trying to make peace not war, it wouldn't make them blind or stupid. Defenses would stay strong until the whole world was MCed, and even then we'd still exercise eternal vigilance. It only takes a few crazies to cause massive damage.
Rightwingers hear the word "peace" and they think flower children, hippies, and unpatriotic cowards. Their ears, eyes, and minds turn off once the "P" word pushes their buttons. Rightwingers are all authoritarians who believe in power, violence, force, and aggression. And their favorite song is Onward, Christian Soldiers which contains: "Onward, Christian soldiers marching as to war"—and that's how they see themselves, and those not marching beside them are cowardly hippy pinko commie draftdodgers. Peace needs to come in a context of safety and verifiability, not a context of foolish carelessness. MC people would not be the first to realize this fact. There are few citizens alive who do not realize it—it's extremely obvious.
"Hope for the best but prepare for the worst" is wise counsel. Toffler is the wisest of the futurists and he advises investing as much in peace as in war, because if we continue sabre rattling and warmongering to keep the military industrial complex happy, we're going to run out of luck and catastrophic terror attacks are a certainty. But there is little effort going into the peace-forms, as Toffler calls them, because our cynical oligarchy sees no economic profit in it, and that's their main yardstick. MCs are the ultimate peace-form. They evolve citizens that are win-win and once the chain-reaction occurs here and in other Western nations, the USA will lose its appetite for sabre rattling and warmongering and the military industrial complex can begin investing in alternative energy products like windmills and solar panels, and also invest in anti-meteor defenses and infrastructure hardening to limit solor flare EMP damage. When hostile countries like Iran see our character change, they will drop their support for terrorism and begin MC creation, since they really LIKE our new attitudes and they re-evaluate their "destroy the evil Satan infidels" attitude.
We need people working on global warming issues, but we instead spend a fortune spying on U.S. citizens and warmongering, making the U.S. look like the Great Satan the Islamics see us as
There was a glorious time in history when our country’s founders devised a plan whereby people who were not free could choose to become free and stay free in a place called the United States of America, where freedom would be preserved via democracy. But people were also free to choose to live without freedom in Europe. Like the founders, it would never even occur to MC leaders to try to push anyone to do anything. MCs are mere OPPORTUNITIES. In 1776 people could choose the progressive challenge and opportunities of freedom or the regressive pseudo-security of having people over them telling them what to do so they weren’t “saddled” with the responsibility of choosing for themselves. Boiling it down to simplest terms:
In 1776 people were given the opportunity to choose freedom from oppression.
Now, in the start of the third millenium, once more it can be stated that people are being given the opportunity to choose freedom from oppression. The opportunity to choose is identical then and now. The only difference is the type of oppression being dumped.
There are many kinds of dysfunctionality operating in the average lifestyle, and most of them are avoidable. But people don’t continue putting up with them because they want to; they do it because they don’t know how to correct them. (The most insidious part of this is that some of these lifestyle strategies are not even generally seen as dysfunctional, because everybody else has adopted them as well: they are “normal.”) But knowledge is power, and those who go the MC route will be empowered to correct their dysfunctionality. At this point, the problems that have been making life so much less than it was meant to be will be transcended and the people who had them will no longer have to be oppressed by them.
MC leaders are simply people that talk about MCs in the media—they will either be famous people who are advocating adoption of MC lifestyles or people in an MC-centered corporation who are responsible for producing and disseminating MC-centered movies, TV series, and speeches to as wide an audience as possible. MC leaders will have no power over any MCs, simply because the MC movement is a grassroots phenomenon with no power structure whatsoever. MCs are started by individuals and families—no governmental, bureaucratic, political, or social engineering interference will be allowed. Why would there be? There's no need—the people themselves start them and run them. Government and politics are irrelevant. MCers will never let the movement get corrupted. We've all seen how our government and its politicans have corrupted our country to please corporatocracy and oligarchy interests, thereby corrupting democracy, rights, freedoms, and the U.S. economy. We will never let this happen to MCs since they're mere lifestyle choices—like living in an apartment, on a farm, commuting by mass transit rather than owning a car, and joining a country club. Grassroots movements are the opposite of government. The former are led by the people, the latter are led by corporatocracy and oligarchy interests which parade political ass clowns in front of us and tell us they're in charge, even though they're mere flunkies.
Registering for MC search and match
MC leaders will simply get a vital message out there. The Matching database on this site will simply help people to find members via computer matching so those who register will be empowered to form the most satisfying and inspiring MC lifestyle possible. In all these actions and transformations, it is the people who get transformed lifestyles that will be getting power. MC leaders won't be getting power via their role. They'll lead to EMpower, not GET power. They're merely spokespeople explaining MC evolution to interested citizens. The people who get transformed lifestyles will finally have the knowledge and power to live a life that really works, and to help others do the same. They'll have the power to help change a nation—and eventually a world—in the MC direction mostly by virtue of being such great examples to emulate. In other words, power to make the world work. That’s the ultimate power. And it comes from the heart.
“We dreamed of independence, and got it . . . . Now we must dream again. . . . All we have to do is act on what we know.”
With all this in mind, you can explore: We Found the Answer to How to Turn This Country Around, and Now We Need Your Help Figuring Out How to Get It to the Few People in a Position to Act on It, The MC Plan Does Amazing Things, Good News and Bad News, The First Enlightenment Versus The Second Enlightenment, MCs—Frequently Asked Questions, and other MC movement articles under the MC Articles subheading on the articles page.
Then read about various MC Scenarios, various MC issues, and then the MC Handbook, which will discuss MC marketability, how to start an MC, what rules are necessary, how to deal with creating the physical environment of an MC, MC rules, a deeper look at common terms, various aspects of PSBs, child monitoring devices, supplementary computer software like childcare scheduling apps, the P.E.T and Winning Family Lifestyles aspects of MC lifestyles, and other helpful guidance sources about Authoritative and Democratic Parenting Programs. Finally, you will find the research results of this site in the MC Articles subheading on the articles page, and it demonstrates that there are serious problems needing urgent attention. That section presents these problems and their symptoms in a way that helps you see where solutions can be found, especially if you have already read the rest of this website.
Note that every one of the hundreds of books we've found that are relevant are reviewed on this site. MCs are the only entity that answers the questions raised by all these authors or by the content of their books/articles (by deduction or induction). Read these reviews and keep the MC info in mind as you read. You'll try in vain to come up with any other conclusion. Even if there was money for bureaucratic, political, social engineering solutions—which there absolutely isn't, and even if it were possible to seriously revamp lifestyles for the better via bureaucratic, political, social engineering guidance—which it absolutely isn't, the bureaucrats and politicians would soon positively do what they've always done: muck it up, let vested interests take it over and taint it, let the profit motive replace the original goals, allow the corporations to twist it into something that lines their—and the politicians'—pockets and that does little for the citizens.
So, since our government would stick its nose in and turn something that started out as benevolent into nightmarish social engineering, as always occurred in the 20th century, we citizens must think in terms of two main contexts: grassroots movements and self-reliance. Such movements wouldn't even consider trying to convince any organization, politician, church, or agency of any kind to get involved. The MC movement is ALL about what we citizens do for ourselves and our families, and has nothing to do with anyone doing anything FOR us. WE will do for OURSELVES. Period.
The first thing that will have entered your mind after reading the Novel part of our website is COULD I POSSIBLY FIND A WAY TO BEGIN ENJOYING SUCH AN MC-BASED LIFESTYLE? Or perhaps IS THE MC LIFESTYLE FOR ME? Or maybe even WHAT WOULD SUCH AN MC LIFESTYLE BE LIKE AND WHAT DO I DO IN ORDER TO TRANSFORM MY PRESENT LIFESTYLE TO AN MC LIFESTYLE? Read on: This site will answer your questions.
The Forest Through The Trees is our MC novel
The Scenarios will allow you to feel what it is like to gradually change your present lifestyle until it becomes an MC lifestyle. All kinds of people are represented, so you will not find it difficult to find a scenario you can identify with. We specifically created scenarios that would cover almost every type of person because we wanted everyone to be able to seriously consider the MC possibilities in their lives.
You won’t find any copouts or waffling in these scenarios. For example, the behavior of a particularly biased and rigid fundamentalist who thinks the Bible is telling him he has to beat on his kids and wife to maintain proper “discipline” won’t be tolerated in an MC. But then, neither will he be persecuted. Let’s face it: he wouldn’t be likely to join an MC anyway until most of the rest of the country was in them and he did it not to be left out of a great lifestyle. But let’s say he did join an MC. His kids and wife would so often choose to be with others that soon he’d get the full impact of P.E.T.’s natural consequences. People don’t like oppression or people who do it. He’d need to talk this out with other members and he would—out of loneliness, guilt, or even openness to learn. It would slowly dawn on him that he was making a fundamental error in his life, doing power trips on people and then blaming the Bible for it.
And when he cited passages that seemed to support his ideas, his MC friends would not only cite other Biblical passages that contradicted the idea that God advises oppression of kids and spouse, they’d also gently let him see the fundamental contradictions involved in insulting the Bible by calling it a child-raising manual and marital relations manual! Most of the world has long ago realized that it’s a book of spiritual and moral guidance that one can supplement one’s other types of knowledge with, if one believes in it. The minute you magnify the intent of Biblical words in such a way as to discredit all knowledge that mankind has acquired since then, you’re using the Bible as a negative force, to discredit, disprove and deny all human scientific and cultural knowledge and progress, and inviting a return to the horrors of the Dark Ages. The formula for the Dark Ages is religion minus science. The formula for the present age is religion plus science.
To hold up a holy book as a denial of other human knowledge is religion minus science, or advocacy of a return to the Dark Ages
To hold up a holy book as a denial of other human knowledge is again religion minus science, or advocacy of a return to the Dark Ages. If you haven’t already, read The First Enlightenment Versus The Second Enlightenment which is one of the MC articles. Religion minus science is the perfect recipe for stagnation, conflict, and cultural degeneration. Read what the Tofflers say about this in their book Powershift. Luckily, most people don’t buy this science-is-Satan-so-let’s-return-to-the-Dark-Ages insanity.
Anyway, back at the MC, this radical fundamentalist MC member would—once he was freed from the terrible guilt of abusing his family (which was no longer occurring)—breathe a sigh of relief and realize that no one was questioning his holy book, or even his right to misuse it as he was to rationalize bad behavior. They were just letting him know that if he acted negatively as a manifestation of his confusion about how one uses a spiritual guidance book, no one would want to be around him.
And if that made him adopt P.E.T. communication styles rather than rationalized oppression, then so much the better. And before you know it, this fellow would have a happy, loving family full of UNoppressed people who liked to be with him, and he’d realize that God’s and Christ’s main message was about love, and NOT about beating kids and women! Incidentally, this fellow would hear nothing but agreement when he said—and he’d be bound to say it—he was merely trying to avoid the evils of permissiveness, and would only be disagreed with when he said he was using negative-power authoritarianism to express his loathing for permissiveness. He’d soon be shown how P.E.T. and Winning Family Lifeskills are neither permissive nor authoritarian, because neither one of these methods works!
MC movement goals are not targeted at any specific group, class, socioeconomic level, race, religion, sex, or section of the country. The MC’s marketing is targeted at the United States of America, initially, and then once a firm foothold is established and the U.S. is actually worth emulating, it will be targeted at the world. It is only for those who choose it because they feel it would make their life work lots better. It’s only to be chosen, and never to be socially engineered. We’ve had enough social engineering heroics to last this planet until the sun swallows it a few billion years from now!
You're probably aware that the world feels ambivalent about our country, admiring our freedoms and affluence, but disliking our tendency to look down on less-fortunate countries—often seeing them as people to exploit and/or put into endless debt. Our conspicuous consumption, greed, crime rate, pollution, smog, SDI, flagrant drug abuse, the failure of our educational system, and the way we insult the illicit-drug-producing countries for being immoral and degenerate when everyone knows that it is the insatiable appetite North Americans have for drugs that keeps the crooks so rich and crime so lucrative—these are all things the rest of the world dislikes about our country. Of course, many of these problems exist in varying degrees in other countries as well. But the U.S. is the major cultural exporter in the world. Mostly via the media, we influence all countries. And since our media presents a picture of violence, greed, sensationalism and flagrant immorality, many countries are hostile to the negative influence American media has—or potentially could have if it wasn't BANNED—on their people. Much of the Islamic movement's anti-American stance is a reaction to precisely this immorality, which they see as evil.
Anyway, once the MC movement has a foothold in our country and other countries are beginning to look fondly upon us as compassionate, successful, and wise, the ambivalence—and in some cases outright hatred—that other countries feel for the United States will begin disappearing. And while this is happening, we Americans will evolve a new feeling for our people and our country and our lives. We will be transformed from an ambivalent country to a proud, hopeful, enlivened, rehumanized, compassionate and wise country. We will no longer have rampant poverty and drug problems that we throw money or rhetoric at and then despair when the problems worsen. We will no longer have turned-off young whom we fail to educate, and who spend most of their time with Facebook, YouTube videos, iPod music, texting, video games, and TVs, and who expect less from life than their parents did. These people often drop out and then fail to qualify for even menial jobs, which in turn makes them ripe for drugs, crime, and other choices that help destroy the fabric of our culture, while simultaneously creating untold heartbreak for their parents. It is a fact that even though political solutions cannot even significantly TOUCH these problems, the MC movement can not only touch them and help us deal with them—it can actually remedy them. MCs will address the root causes of these problems; every MC solution gets to the actual cause of the problem and takes effective action.
The Scenarios will give you an abbreviated grasp of how root causes are addressed and effectively dealt with so as to preclude many of the personal, interpersonal and social maladies mentioned above. But what's more, once you can truly identify with one or more Scenario, you'll be empowered to go back and reread the Novel part of our site, but this time insert yourself as one of the main characters—one of the Galaxy members whose lives are so full, meaningful, satisfying, loving, happy, and yet challenging.
In essence, then, the Scenarios will help you to realize that this is your LIFE we are talking about here, and if you think this is all a fantasy then you may be abandoning hope that you can really live the way you want and with whom you really want; you may be trying desperately to "settle for" a life that isn't working just so you can retain the "comfort" of the same, boring existence which is devoid of genuine intimacy, connectedness, and love. It boils down to the safety of death as compared with the risk of life and all the fears and uncertainties that go with it. Sure, it's possible that you're one of the under two percent of the people whose lives are fully functional and happy and satisfying. But the odds are at best only one in fifty that this is so. So we're addressing the vast majority of people, here.
As the Microcommunity (MC) movement begins to get a foothold in the U.S., it will need many things supporting it besides this website. Movies, TV series, audio and video tapes, books, pamphlets, magazines, newsletters and computer programs will ensure multimedia launch and ideological maintenance, in coordination with affiliated famous people. Personal Status Boards (PSBs) will ensure that communication success and communication quality stays at a groundbreaking, cultural high. P.E.T. books will offer ways of learning more about Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.)-based parenting and communication. The Novel part of our site will reinforce the quantum-leap cultural transformation experience of an eventual movie we hope the Novel someday becomes. (Without MC movies, the MC media blitz will fail and the MC movement itself will never launch.) The research and articles on our site will give you many of the trees of wisdom needed to see the forest clearly. These will give millions of potential MC hopefuls a resource to refer to as the MC chain reaction accelerates, a resource representing the high quality positive power of the information age: KNOWLEDGE.
