We punish people for illegal actions that they commit. To begin to punish people for what they believe or because of a group they are part of would be to subvert and, if successful, revert or revoke the American Constitution."

Leftist legal scholars consider the 1st Amendment an annoying impediment to progressive policy goals. A lot of the weakest and most obnoxious theories in law schools, ones that have developed on college campuses, allow for punishing speech they don't like but accept speech they do like, and are likely to have an increased presense in courtrooms and perhaps even on the Supreme Court.
